Newly Redesigned Patek Philippe Model 5235 Regulator Special Concept

Article ArchivePublished

interprets the dial design of a regulator clock in a wristwatch format,Patek Philippein the field of. The approach of using three displays to indicate hours, minutes, and seconds is truly creative. This innovation does not stem solely from a design perspective, but rather from the desire to foster more innovative effects through this novel layout. To put the concept into practice, watchIt required a very slim automatic movement, and the classic 240 movement was the obvious choice. However, due to the unconventional position of the small seconds sub-dial at five o'clock, it did not meet the requirement for the planned six o'clock position. The 240 movement was launched in nineteen seventy-seven, featuring a 22K gold mini-rotor embedded within the main plate, resulting in a movement thickness of only two point five three millimetres; to this day, the movement remains among the slimmest automatic movements on the market, serving as a valuable source of inspiration for the development of new movements. Thanks to the superior advantages of the original movement, combined with several innovations, the new Patek Philippe 31-260REGQA movement is sufficient to set a brand-new benchmark. The small seconds sub-dial is positioned squarely between the centre and the periphery, with its area maximised to create the best possible legibility, embodying yet another Patek Philippe watchmaking philosophy: that time indications must be balanced and clear.

Innovation one: The oscillator is manufactured from Silinvar® material

Patek Philippe has broken new ground by basing the new movement on oscillator components made of Silinvar® material from the very beginning of the design process. Silinvar® material is extracted from silicon and is the result of high-tech research and development; the Spiromax® balance spring is one such oscillator component made from it. The new spring is flat and well-coiled, yet it can expand and contract in a perfectly concentric state, thanks to the exclusive patented geometric design of the 'Patek Philippe terminal curve'. The spring is paired with a Pulsomax® escapement to control time distribution; the escapement lever and escape wheel are also made of Silinvar® material, featuring a novel geometry for which a patent application has been filed. The Spiromax® balance spring improves the isochronism of the watch, and power efficiency is enhanced by the Pulsomax® escapement, making the rate more accurate and long-term reliable. Furthermore, Silinvar® components are completely anti-magnetic, exhibit excellent shock resistance, possess anti-corrosion properties, and require no lubrication.

Innovation two: A brand new gear train ─ interlocking teeth

Patek Philippe engineers were not content with the new oscillator design but continued to strive for further achievements. They completely overhauled the gear train between the barrel and the escape wheel, as well as the appearance of the gears and pinions, conducting in-depth analysis of the relevant tooth shapes and recalculating them to design exclusive tooth profiles for the centre wheel, third wheel, fourth wheel, and their respective pinions. The new shapes improve the meshing effect between gear teeth and pinion teeth, reduce friction, increase tolerances between different axial distances, and further enhance the efficiency of power transmission from the barrel to the escape wheel; all these results contribute to an increase in power conversion efficiency while reducing component wear.

Innovation three: An oscillation frequency of three point two Hertz, truly exceptional

The 31-260 REG QA new regulator movement incorporates innovative technologies, benefiting efficiency and isochronism, and also yields many positive results. Looking at the classic 240 self-winding movement, the oscillation frequency is twenty-one thousand six hundred semi-oscillations per hour; the new movement's oscillation frequency has been increased by ten percent, reaching twenty-three thousand and forty semi-oscillations per hour, equivalent to three point two Hertz; the power reserve has also increased accordingly. With the increase in oscillation frequency, the new movement can meet the established standards of the Patek Philippe Seal, easily adjusting the rate accuracy to -3/+2 seconds per twenty-four hours. At the same time, thanks to the improved power efficiency of the gear train and escapement, the tension of the mainspring can be reduced, thereby lowering the shear stress on the gears. This reduces friction between the delicate gear pivots and the jewel bearings, allowing for a longer movement life and greater operational reliability. These are the two key elements that comply with the Patek Philippe Seal regulations, as well as the prerequisites for a watch to be precious and worthy of being passed down through generations.

Innovation four: An extra-long mainspring for increased power

The outstanding power efficiency of the new movement allows it to use a more flexible and longer mainspring. Therefore, despite the higher oscillation frequency of the 31-260 REG QA new movement and the use of only a single barrel, the power reserve can still reach up to 60 hours, whereas the 240 movement has a maximum of 48 hours. The extra-long mainspring brings another benefit: when the mainspring is unwinding, the torque curve is flatter, allowing the balance amplitude and rate to remain stable for most of the time between a fully wound and a fully unwound state. The result is that the movement's rate is more accurate and durable, allowing the owner to choose to leave the watch idle over the weekend without needing to recalibrate the time and annual calendar display on Monday morning before wearing it.

Other major innovations: Patek Philippe has introduced further innovations to ensure the new regulator annual calendar watch has a longer lifespan and greater reliability. Like all Patek Philippe automatic movements, the 31-260 REG QA movement can also be wound manually. Whenever the automatic winding mode is activated, the manual winding mechanism automatically disengages, thereby increasing the watch's winding power and reducing wear. In addition, Patek Philippe has improved the operation of the manual winding crown gear, adopting a new engagement mechanism to reduce wear and improve efficiency, making the manual winding process even smoother. The new movement is equipped with a 22K gold mini-rotor embedded within the base plate, which is zero point three millimetres thicker than the 240 movement's rotor, giving it more mass and promoting winding power. It is also decorated with Geneva circular graining, a miniature masterpiece of art that is breathtaking. The 240 movement has been on the market for thirty-four years; by comparison, the new 31-260 REG QA movement has an oscillation frequency increased by ten per cent and a power reserve increased by twenty-five per cent, with a total overall efficiency improvement of thirty per cent. Such results highlight the immense potential of mechanical timepieces and, in the context of today's global energy debates, serve as a model, demonstrating that even in traditional areas such as classic technology, there is still ample room to significantly improve efficiency performance.

Self-winding annual calendar mechanism with display window mode

Model 5235 new regulator annual calendar watch measures time with second-level precision while also being able to accurately display time information with larger intervals. The new base movement incorporates an annual calendar mechanism, which has been one of Patek Philippe's best-selling complications for the fifteen years since its debut. The annual calendar function is practical and convenient, using three large display windows to show the day, month, and date information, automatically distinguishing between thirty and thirty-one-day months, requiring correction only once a year on March first. The new movement is equipped with an annual calendar mechanism named the '31-260 REG QA'; it consists of three hundred and twenty parts (one hundred and eighty-one for the base movement and one hundred and thirty-nine for the annual calendar mechanism), with a thickness of five point zero eight millimetres (two point six zero millimetres for the base movement and two point four eight millimetres for the annual calendar mechanism) and a diameter of thirty-three millimetres (thirty-one point seven four millimetres for the base movement and thirty-three millimetres for the annual calendar mechanism), making it perfectly sized and exuding a sense of timeless elegance.

All-new regulator-style dial, combining classic Calatrava style

The new Patek Philippe watch features a regulator dial with an extraordinary design, as elegant and charming as any creation from their Geneva workshops. The watch body showcases the classic silhouette of the Calatrava timepiece, with a sleek, rounded case that has been a benchmark for seventy years. The watch employs a new ultra-thin movement, resulting in a thickness of only eleven millimetres, which is truly astonishing for an automatic watch equipped with an annual calendar mechanism. With a case diameter of forty point five millimetres, the design is well-proportioned, elegant, and stylish. The classic three-part case design, consisting of the case band, bezel, and case back, is crafted from 18K white gold, serving as a perfect example of the Bauhaus 'form follows function' design philosophy. The case band is carefully chamfered, and the bezel is decorated with a straight-line pattern that complements the brushed finish of the dial, creating a seamless effect. The lugs are slightly inclined, allowing the chamfer of the case band to extend, perfecting the watch's lines and ensuring it sits comfortably on the wrist. The watch is paired with a precious dark blue alligator leather strap with square scales, hand-stitched, and fitted with an 18K white gold prong buckle engraved with 'Patek Philippe'. The exhibition case back allows the owner to admire the unique components of the movement and its exquisite decorative effects, including the innovative Pulsomax® escapement, the Spiromax® balance spring, the Geneva circular graining on the mini-rotor, the Geneva stripes on the bevels, and various gold-filled engravings.

The exterior design of the new Patek Philippe model 5235 watch is second to none. Protected by a sapphire crystal, it features a central minute hand, with the hour sub-dial positioned at twelve o'clock and the small seconds sub-dial at six o'clock, both perfectly sized. The large annual calendar display windows are arranged concentrically around the dial: the day window is at ten o'clock, the month window at two o'clock, and the date window at six o'clock. The brand name 'PATEK PHILIPPE GENEVE' is engraved along the three o'clock horizontal axis of the dial; depending on the angle of incident light, the entire dial shifts from pitch black to silver-grey, softly highlighting the novel texture of the dial. Blue transferred numerals, hour markers, and other scales ensure clear legibility. The railway minute track and the hour and small seconds sub-dials are matched with a brighter silver-grey background, contrasting with the darker silver-grey centre of the dial to make them stand out; the centre of the dial also features a short five-minute scale display. The Arabic numerals are clearly displayed, the baton-style blued steel hands are crafted from 18K white gold, and the blue calendar indicators paired with a red background highlight the stylish technical flair of this two thousand and eleven novelty, paying tribute to the precision of historical longcase clocks. The silver-grey two-tone dial is adorned with a vertical brushed finish, while the two large sub-dials are decorated with circular graining, adding to its appeal.

The new Patek Philippe model 5235 regulator-style annual calendar watch perfectly demonstrates how their Geneva workshops blend avant-garde aesthetics with timeless elegance. The innovative features of this watch are not limited to the surface but stem from its mechanical core, setting a new standard for the watchmaking industry and fully showcasing the unique characteristics inherent to Patek Philippe.
