Patek Philippe's Most Popular World Time Wristwatch Ref. 5230
Patek PhilippeWorld time watches, also known by collectors as “Heure Universelles”, are among the most popular complications by Patek Philippe, with a history spanning nearly 80 years. Recently, the names of certain time zones have changed or been replaced by new designations, making Baselworld undoubtedly the ideal platform for Patek Philippe to present the new world time watch Ref. 5230, which replaces previous world time models. This evolution also offered a wonderful opportunity for Patek Philippe to redesign the refined case, dial, and hands.

New model, new design
For Patek Philippe, this was also an opportunity to redesign the appearance of the World Time watch, subtly refining the details to showcase a contemporary individual charm. Under the leadership of Sandrine·Stern, wife of the President, the design department drew inspiration from the traditional elements that have made Patek Philippe world-renowned for decades. The new Ref. 5230 World Time watch features a case in white gold or rose gold (5N), paired with wing-style lugs and a narrow, polished bezel, allowing the watch to stand out from previous generations of World Time models. The hands feature a new design: instead of the traditional ring-shaped hour hand and dauphine minute hand, it now uses a “Southern Cross” style skeletonised hour hand and a diamond-profile minute hand. Both hands have a sharp central ridge between two finely bevelled edges. Like the case, they and the applied baton hour markers are crafted from 18K white gold or rose gold (5N).
A centre of rare crafts
This title has a double meaning. It represents that Patek Philippe's manufacture has been a centre within the industry for top-tier decorative crafts since its establishment in 1839. It also signifies that the centre of the world time watch's dial is the perfect stage for showcasing various traditional production techniques. Patek Philippe world time watches featuring cloisonné enamel map decorations are renowned worldwide. The dial centres of other world time watches are decorated with guilloché patterns, and today, the black dial centre of the Ref. 5230 world time watch features a woven wave pattern. This guilloché motif draws inspiration from a precious pocket watch displayed in the Patek Philippe Museum, the guilloché surface of which is also coated with a layer of transparent blue enamel. Patek Philippe still masters these nearly extinct rare crafts and continuously guards these precious techniques and expertise to ensure they are passed down through generations. The same applies to watchmaking equipment. For instance, the manually operated engraving tool used to create the dial guilloché is nearly a century old, yet it remains as diligent and precise as ever.

The world time watch holds unprecedented importance in our globally networked lives. We fly all over the world, engage in online conversations with people everywhere, conduct international trade, and share knowledge on a global scale. Therefore, we need to know the time of our travel destination or the region where our interlocutor is located. The Patek Philippe world time watch accomplishes this function perfectly, making all 24 world time zones visible at a glance. Local time is displayed most clearly; when the designated city name is located above the small red arrow at the 12 o'clock position, the hour and minute hands indicate the time in the traditional manner. In the other 23 time zones, you can read the time directly on the 24-hour scale ring, which rotates anti-clockwise inside the city disc. The time indicated by the minute hand remains the same across all time zones.
This ingenious world time indication function was invented in the 1930s by Geneva watchmaker Louis Cottier. Patek Philippe subsequently improved this mechanism and patented it. When arriving in different time zones, you simply need to repeatedly press the pusher located at the 10 o'clock position on the case to align the corresponding city name with the red arrow at 12 o'clock. Each press of this pusher advances the hour hand by 1 hour, while the city disc and the 24-hour scale ring rotate anti-clockwise by 1 hour. During this process, the time zone mechanism is decoupled from the movement, ensuring that the minute hand runs accurately and the balance wheel amplitude remains unaffected. The time for all 24 time zones is displayed with precision, meeting the stringent requirements of the Patek Philippe Seal.
Precise heritage
Patek Philippe's in-house manufactured Caliber 240 HU movement ensures the timekeeping precision of the watch and the convenient operation of the world time function, rewriting the history of watchmaking with this ultra-thin automatic mechanical movement. Measuring a mere 3.88 mm in thickness, the sophisticated time zone and self-winding mechanism represents the ideal movement choice for slim, elegant world time timepieces. Thanks to a patented design dating back to 1977, the size of the self-winding rotor has been substantially reduced, allowing it to be integrated entirely between the movement bridges. Despite its compact dimensions, this oscillating weight still generates ample winding power as it is crafted from 22K gold, which increases its mass and torque. Over the years, this movement has been continually refined and combined with a world time mechanism. It is also a movement incorporating modern technology, featuring a balance spring manufactured from the exclusive Spiromax® silicon material. The movement delivers a power reserve of at least 48 hours, with a daily rate variance of no more than -3 to +2 seconds, exceeding typical chronometer standards. The finishing and decoration of the watch fully comply with all requirements of the Patek Philippe Seal. The bridges feature chamfered edges and Geneva stripes. The gold mini-rotor is likewise adorned with Geneva stripes alongside the Calatrava cross motif, which serves as the brand emblem of Patek Philippe. The movement bridges are embellished with circular graining. The gilt brass gears feature bevelled and chamfered spokes. In addition, the gold-filled movement engravings on the rhodium-plated bridges and 35 gleaming ruby bearing jewels form an integral part of the movement's decorative details. Through the sapphire crystal case back, this breathtaking craftsmanship is revealed in all its glory.
The new Ref. 5230 watch will replace all previous generations of Patek Philippe world time models, currently available in two versions: 18K rose gold and 18K white gold. Both versions feature a dial with a white city disc, a 24-hour scale ring incorporating a dual-colour day/night display and sun/moon indicators, accompanied by a black centre dial adorned with a delicate hand-guilloché pattern. The sole difference between the two versions lies in the hour markers and hands, which are crafted from the same 18K gold as the case. Both variants are fitted with a hand-stitched large square-scale alligator leather strap and a Calatrava fold-over clasp. The white gold version comes with a shiny black strap and a 18K white gold clasp, whilst the rose gold version features a chocolate brown strap paired with a 18K rose gold clasp.
