What is a smart watch? Things to note when buying a smart watch
Ever since Apple introduced the smart watch, smart watches have transformed our understanding of timepieces and brought us a great deal of convenience. However, do you know what truly qualifies as a smart watch? What should we look out for when purchasing a smart watch? Follow Xiaoya below to find out.

What is a smartwatch?
A smartwatch is a watch with a built-in smart operating system that runs smartphone software and connects to the internet to offer versatile functions, enabling the synchronisation of phone calls, text messages, emails, photos, music and more. According to media reports in 2013 3, tech giants such as Apple, Samsung and Google are all set to release smartwatches later in 2013. Avi Greengart, an analyst at US market research firm Current Analysis, suggested that 2013 could become the year of the smartwatch.
Smartwatches currently on the market can be broadly divided into two types:
1. Non-calling smartwatches: These rely on a connection to a smartphone to deliver versatile functions, allowing you to sync and manage phone calls, text messages, emails, photos, music and more.
2. Calling smartwatches: These support SIM card insertion and are essentially smartphones in a watch form factor. Most models on the market run on the Android system.
Things to consider when buying a smartwatch
1, what do you plan to use your smartwatch for?
Clearly, we do not buy smartwatches simply to tell the time, because if that were our only requirement, a traditional mechanical watch would be a much better choice. Therefore, we need to be clear about the functions we want it to perform.
Looking at current smartwatch offerings on the market, they typically fall into two main categories: health data monitoring and all-round smart experiences. Health data monitoring devices usually feature functions such as heart rate monitoring, step counting and calorie burn tracking. When choosing this type of product, you must be clear about what you need and what it can offer you.
On the other hand, all-round smart experience watches focus more on the application experience on the wrist. For example, the Apple Watch acts effectively as a second screen for the iPhone, alleviating the iPhone's battery life issues. Of course, the battery life of such products tends to be shorter than that of other smartwatches.
2, what kind of smartwatch do you like?
Once we have established our requirements, we need to choose our favourite from a plethora of smartwatches featuring different design styles. For instance, whether the dial is round or square, whether the case material is metal or plastic, and, of course, we also need to consider the choice of strap or bracelet.
This process is essentially no different from going out to buy clothes: once you have decided on the type you want, naturally you should pick the exact product you like the most.
3, which platform's smartwatch are you used to using?
We all know that a smartwatch delivers a superior user experience when paired with a smartphone from the same ecosystem. So the question is: which platform is your current phone on? Do you plan to switch phones and operating platforms for your new smartwatch?
Currently, Apple's Apple Watch, Google's Android Wear and Pebble are among the more mainstream smartwatch platforms, each offering distinct characteristics in terms of system experience and compatibility, alongside certain drawbacks.
The Apple Watch is exceptional in terms of case design and functional experience, but its 18-hour battery life is clearly unsatisfactory, and watchOS does not have enough standalone apps to fully showcase its advantages. Android Wear offers a choice of smartwatches across multiple brands and categories, and while it also suffers from battery life issues, it gives users a wider range of options.
Smartwatches represent the future trend of development. Although smartwatches do not yet enjoy widespread acceptance, as they continue to evolve, we believe they will be embraced by an increasing number of people in the future.
