Case Shape Comparison: Patek Philippe vs. Vacheron Constantin
Patek Philippe andVacheron Constantinare truly the two veteran brands of the watchmaking world. From the past to the present, Patek Philippe andVacheron Constantinhave explored them all.
Cushion-shaped
Patek Philippe andVacheron ConstantinTheir approach to watch manufacturing is truly very similar. Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin have used many complex movements in cushion-shaped cases. Both brands have utilised the cushion-shaped case to its fullest potential. Patek Philippe has launched chronographs and minute repeaters in this case shape, while Vacheron Constantin has introduced the tilted-dial 1921 and the latest Harmony collection. In 1928, Vacheron Constantin launched a single-button cushion-shaped pulsometer chronograph; correspondingly, Patek Philippe also launched a cushion-shaped single-button chronograph in 1928. The Vacheron Constantin 1921 can be considered the most unique cushion-shaped watch in the industry because the entire dial is tilted. The Vacheron Constantin 1921 was introduced starting in 1919; it is worth noting that the tilt direction of the dial on 1921 watches varied across different periods—some tilted to the left, others to the right. Similarly, this watch has now been released as a modern replica, with the dial of the modern model tilting to the right. In the last two years, Vacheron Constantin launched a new flagship cushion-shaped collection, Harmony. The Harmony chronograph is the most impressive, including a split-seconds chronograph and a regular chronograph. Correspondingly, Patek Philippe's modern cushion-shaped watches include the perpetual calendar 5940 and the split-seconds chronograph 5950, which can be seen as a direct challenge to Vacheron Constantin.
Rectangular
Compared to other special case shapes, there are many rectangular watches in the watchmaking world, and many classic models have been born, such as the Cartier Tank and the Girard-Perregaux 1945. Patek Philippe andVacheron ConstantinSquare watches not only come in a wide variety of models, but both major watchmakers have also created their own signature square timepieces. Among them, Patek Philippe's most famous is undoubtedly the 5101 tourbillon. 5101 is a square 10-day manual-winding tourbillon. Patek Philippe tourbillon watches have traditionally positioned the tourbillon on the case back, making it invisible from the dial side for a very understated look. Patek Philippe's explanation is that the lubricating oil used in the tourbillon is prone to shortening its lifespan when exposed to direct sunlight, hence placing the tourbillon on the back. Another very famous square Patek Philippe is the 5100 "Manta Ray". 5100 earned the nickname "Manta Ray" due to the "wings" on both sides of the case. In contrast to the "Manta Ray", Vacheron Constantin also features a square watch with "wings". The official name of this watch is Aronde 1954. Back in the day, this square Vacheron Constantin was also known as the "Swallow". As we can see, while both feature "wings" on either side of the case, Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe handled the design differently. Beyond these, Patek Philippe's current square lineup also includes 5124 and 5200, where 5200 is a manual-winding 8-day long power reserve model. Basswood. Height. Length. Width. Depth. Area. Volume. Tonneau-shaped
Vacheron Constantinbegan using tonneau-shaped cases before Patek Philippe. As early as 1912, Vacheron Constantin introduced its first tonneau-shaped watch, and some viewpoints suggest that Vacheron Constantin was the first watchmaker to utilise a tonneau-shaped case. Shortly after its launch, the tonneau-shaped watch became a signature model for Vacheron Constantin, boasting exceptionally high recognisability. Meanwhile, Patek Philippe did not lag behind, beginning to release a significant number of tonneau-cased watches. As we know, Patek Philippe actually launched many two-hand manual-winding tonneau models, and even included minute repeaters. Among these, the most widely recognised Patek Philippe today is the tonneau-shaped Gondolo. This watch was named after a historical retailer of Patek Philippe. On the other hand, Vacheron Constantin's tonneau-shaped watches evolved into the Malte collection today. Clearly, Patek Philippe's Gondolo and Vacheron Constantin's Malte present distinct shapes and vastly differing styles.
Summary: The three shapes above represent only a portion of the case comparisons between Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, demonstrating just how remarkable they truly are, with not only supreme technical prowess but also versatile styles.
