A Companion in Time: Vacheron Constantin
Vacheron Constantinis the world's oldest watch manufacturer, and since its founding in Geneva in 1755, it has never ceased production.
Starting with a talented watchmaker
In 1755, the talented young watchmaker Jean-Marc Vacheron founded his first watchmaking workshop in the heart of Geneva. Full of curiosity and passion for human culture, Jean-Marc Vacheron often maintained an open mind and continuously studied watchmaking techniques, thus becoming a very successful independent Genevan watchmaker—a 'Cabinotier'. In 1819, the experienced businessman François Constantin partnered with the descendants of Jean-Marc Vacheron to establish the prestigious Vacheron Constantin.
The arrival of a genius
In 1839,Vacheron Constantininvited Georges-Auguste Leschot to serve as the company's technical director, a move that rewrote the history of the company and the entire watchmaking industry. Georges-Auguste Leschot was not only a mechanical genius but also possessed extraordinary vision and a rich imagination. He designed the pantograph, the first instrument capable of repeatedly and mass-producing various watch parts, bringing a groundbreaking reform to the entire Swiss watchmaking industry. Before this, watch movements were composed of parts made independently by hand, meaning the craftsmanship of each part varied, resulting in movement parts that were not interchangeable. This revolutionary invention by Georges-Auguste Leschot changed the entire watchmaking process, significantly shortening production time and increasing efficiency.
A business strategy of low volume and high price
With a long historyVacheron Constantin, and with years of watchmaking experience, it has produced many great classics. However, "minimum volume, maximum quality, and highest selling price" has always been the business strategy of Vacheron Constantin. Today, Vacheron Constantin's annual production at its Geneva factory is only 6000 watches.
Every watch is meticulously documented
Since 1840, the production drawings, records, sales dates, and movement and case numbers of every single watch have been preserved intact in the company's archives. Combining superb technology, rigorous testing, exquisite craftsmanship, and perfect styling, they have created one noble, elegant, stunning, and highly collectible rare classic after another. Throughout the long history of watchmaking, it has remained an enduring symbol of luxury and elegance.
$500 Million: The World's Most Expensive Watch
Vacheron ConstantinThe classic Kallista is the most expensive watch in the world. This watch was made in 1886, originally ordered by King Khalid of Saudi Arabia, who passed away during its creation. After its completion in 1986, it was purchased by an anonymous buyer for $350 million. On 1987 12 3, the Kallista changed hands again, purchased on behalf of a client by Pierre Halimi, owner of the Palm Beach jewellery store. Halimi claimed the transaction was completed for $500 million. Consequently, the story of the Kallista appreciating by $4000 per day spread far and wide. Shortly after, Pierre Halimi brought this world's most expensive watch into the United States and delivered it to an undisclosed buyer.
The case and bracelet of the Kallista are fully set with diamonds, using 118 meticulously selected, top-grade blue-white emerald-cut diamonds, weighing 130 carats. (The dial features diamonds weighing 1 carats each; the outer bezel has 14 diamonds totalling 2-4 carats, and the bracelet uses diamonds of 2 carats each). To create this watch, Vacheron Constantin assembled the finest craftsmen, taking 20 months and 6000 hours of work to complete. "Kallista" means flawless perfection in Greek, and the finished piece is indeed absolutely perfect.
