Review of the Vacheron Constantin Métiers d'Art double-dial watch
Vacheron ConstantinAs the world's oldest watch manufacturer, Vacheron Constantin has always shouldered the mission of protecting and transmitting the precious "living" values of decorative arts, further showcasing this superlative craftsmanship in its watch creations. Launched in 2008, these two timepieces pay tribute to the world-famous explorers Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus. Let us take a closer look at this watch together.
Introduction to the Vacheron Constantin Métiers d'Art double-dial watch
This exquisitely refined watch is entirely handmade, embodying the patience, passion, and dedication of the master watchmakers, as well as their relentless pursuit of perfection, upholding the spirit of Geneva's "cabinetmakers" so revered by the brand's founder. Due to the extremely complex manufacturing process, each model is limited to just 60 pieces.
Inheriting the "DNA" of the Métiers d'Art collection, these two timepieces feature unique structures and intricately devised components, recreating the thrilling maritime journeys of great explorers on specially processed dials to perfectly interpret the collection's symbolic significance. We cannot measure a wondrous and mysterious journey with time alone; we can only savour the reasons behind it in detail, one by one—this is legend.
The watch dial is crafted from enamel. The "grand feu" coloured enamel dial consists of two partially overlapping upper and lower tiers. The upper tier depicts a portion of the globe, recreating historical footprints related to the explorers' routes, while the lower dial forms a 1320 curved shape. The 12 hour numerals move clockwise within the sector-shaped minute track on the lower dial, highlighting the finest traditional watchmaking craftsmanship and a truly breathtaking complication.
Do you know how to read the time on this watch? The hour numerals move from the outer edge of the upper dial to the lower dial, cleverly transforming the hour marker into a symbolic indicator for minutes, allowing the time to be told at a glance. This magical time-reporting effect is entirely based on a uniquely ingenious construction, which required a vast amount of research and development. The time displayed in the image above should be 8 hours and 26 minutes.
Both the upper and lower dials of the watch must be fired using the grand feu enamelling technique to ensure they perfectly complement one another: identical colours, identical firing times, and identical lustre. Because this work is performed entirely by hand, every creation and every dial is a truly unique piece of art.
For grand feu enamelled dials, this enamelling process begins with outlining and uses fine brushes to apply colour point by point, delicately painting the decorative motifs. Every step of filling in the coloured glass compound requires extreme care and precise posture, after which the dial is placed into a kiln heated to temperatures between 700-800 degrees Celsius. At the end of the firing process, the decorative motifs must be coated with another layer of translucent flux or protective layer, then placed into a high temperature of 900 degrees Celsius to complete the firing, followed by grinding and final polishing processes. Each new colour applied means repeating the same operation, so the dial may need to be fired up to 30 times to take shape.
Giving life to the Métiers d'Art Tribute to Explorers watch collection is the stable-performing Vacheron Constantin 1126AT self-winding mechanical movement. Developed independently by Vacheron Constantin's watchmakers, this patented movement drives the time along the path of the explorers, pushing watchmaking craftsmanship to its absolute peak.
