Do You Know the Background Story of Jaeger-LeCoultre
Although Jaeger-LeCoultre is a very well-known watch brand that attracts a great deal of attention, few people take the time to learn about its background story. Today, we will take you through their history.
Background Story
Jaeger-LeCoultre is a quintessential luxury Swiss watch brand. Many luxury Swiss watch brands share two characteristics: they originate from the Joux Valley in the Jura Mountains, such as Piaget; or they are the result of a collaboration between two individuals, such as Patek Philippe (founded by Patek and Philippe) and Girard-Perregaux (collaboration between Girard and Perregaux). Brands that possess both characteristics include Audemars Piguet and Jaeger-LeCoultre, which enjoy immense global prestige.
Before the 18th century, British and French watchmakers dominated the watchmaking industry, supplying precision chronometers to merchant ships to assist with global navigation. Meanwhile, another watchmaking force was quietly developing in Switzerland. A large number of French Protestant artisans, fleeing religious persecution, settled in the Joux Valley within the Swiss Jura Mountains. Snowbound for six months of the year, the long winters kept residents indoors, giving them ample time and patience to craft increasingly intricate mechanical devices such as music boxes, automata, and clocks. By the 19th century, the valley's inhabitants, known as 'Combiers', possessed watchmaking technology that surpassed that of Britain and France, leaving the rest of the world behind.
Jaeger-LeCoultre was born in this very valley. Antoine LeCoultre was born into the LeCoultre family in 1803, initially working as an apprentice in his father's blacksmith shop while dedicating himself to gear-cutting and metallurgy. In 1833, he established his own workshop in the town of Le Sentier, leaving the family business. By 1860, his company had grown to over 100 employees, specialising in precision watch components and successively launching hundreds of watch movements, thereby cementing its status in the Swiss watch industry. In 1903, at the age of Antoine100 (though he did not live to see it, it was indeed a fitting birthday legacy), his grandson Jacques-David partnered with the French marine chronometer manufacturer Edmon Jaeger to establish the Jaeger-LeCoultre manufacture known today.
