Today I am sharing with you regardingJaeger-LeCoultresome technical features of the unique Gyrotourbillon skill, sharing the remarkable aspects of the second-generation Gyrotourbillon.

  Jaeger-LeCoultreSecond-generation Gyrotourbillon

Jaeger-LeCoultreFollowing the launch of the sensational Gyrotourbillon 1 watch in 2004, Jaeger-LeCoultre chose the reversible case of the Reverso watch collection in 2008 to house this cutting-edge technological innovation—the Gyrotourbillon 2, housed within the new 174 movement, with its greatest highlight being the inclusion of a spherical balance spring with a terminal curve, thereby creating the first-ever watch equipped with a cylindrical balance spring.

  Technical features

  1. A core feature of the Gyrotourbillon 2 is the cylindrical balance spring with terminal curves, invented by British horologist John Arnold and patented in 1782. This ingenious invention offers significant advantages in adjustment over traditional flat balance springs, ensuring stable and perfectly isochronous operation. However, due to the extremely complex manufacturing process and the high level of micro-mechanical expertise required, it was historically reserved for marine chronometers and large pocket watches, making its application in wristwatches exceptionally difficult. Jaeger-LeCoultre's master watchmakers have introduced a fresh concept by incorporating it into the Gyrotourbillon, most crucially providing a guarantee of high chronometric precision for this timepiece. Furthermore, to enhance its visual allure, the cylinder has been heat-treated to achieve a blued steel finish.

  2. The oscillation frequency of the balance spring system in the Gyrotourbillon 2 has been increased from the 21600 vibrations per hour found in the 1 to 28800 vibrations per hour. The balance wheel is still crafted from 14K gold, and the spring utilises the aforementioned blue cylindrical balance spring with terminal curves, alongside a free-sprung balance system with 14K gold adjustment weights. According to chronometric principles, increasing the frequency is a highly effective measure for improving a watch's precision. When combined with the free-sprung balance system, this ensures that the accuracy of the Gyrotourbillon 2 is significantly improved compared to the 1.

  3. The rotation speed of the inner cage of the Gyrotourbillon 2 has been increased from 1 revolution every 24 seconds to 1 revolutions every 18.75 seconds, while the outer cage rotation speed remains at once every 1 minute. This setting is consistent with the aforementioned increase in the oscillation frequency of the balance spring system; as the frequency increases, the inner-axis tourbillon must necessarily rotate at a faster speed.

Summary: This is the brilliance of the second-generation Gyrotourbillon; the technology has reached a very, very mature stage.
