The Reincarnator of Time --- Cartier

Guarding within the wheel of time, standing with the most graceful posture to form the most beautiful scenery, waiting for the daylight to evolve into the last sunset at the edge of the sky, etching that yearning into the deepest mortal world, and anticipating the flash of artistic inspiration. Introduction to the Reincarnator of Time --- Cartier

  Childhood, innocent fantasies

As the saying goes, "If life could only be as it was when we first met, why should the autumn wind mourn the painted fan?" When time stands still at that exact moment, it touches the deepest parts of the soul. The years are peaceful, and the reflections of time emerge before our eyes; time flies swiftly, much like falling blossoms and ruthless flowing streams. Leaning on the shoulder of time, the heart beats in rhythm, while distant memories blur the silent hours, and the eyes are filled with searching.

Quietly facing this wall of time, the handwriting under the dim yellow light describes the long history of Cartier, yet this "golden time" also fleetingly outlines my mottled memories. Those lovely animals, playful frolics, and companionable soft toys from childhood remain vivid before my eyes. Who would have thought that years later, they would transform into artistic elements within Cartier's world? All kinds of animals are brought to life under the skilled hands of Cartier's designers, composing a series of moving and versatile melodies for Cartier's decorative arts.

This carp clock demonstrates Cartier's aesthetic taste, which transcends eras in its pursuit of beauty. On a sea made of natural crystal, waves of emerald and mother-of-pearl rise up, and amidst the surging billows, two jade carp cheerfully toss and play. Resting on the back of the carp is a crystal-textured fan-shaped clock. The dial is set with diamond numerals, and the hands are designed in the shape of seahorses, with every tiny detail reflecting the free spirit of the ocean.

The jade figurine originates from 18-century China. This mystery clock is the ninth of a series of 12 clocks featuring animals or mythical creatures produced by Cartier between 1922 and 1931, inspired by mantel clocks from the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, where the movement was typically placed on the back of the animal. Regarding these pieces, Cartier history author Hans Nadelhoffer once wrote: "Although they lack the iconic significance embodied by Fabergé eggs... these mystery clocks still captivate and fascinate people..." These are masterpieces drawn from the natural world.

Exquisite piece after exquisite piece carries me away in unbridled imagination, much like a childhood musical box that, once opened, fills the air with delightful notes. Cartier mysteriously integrates art into the tunnel of time, presenting elements rich in Chinese charm or cultural connotations from various continents to the public in an extraordinary way.

Youth, gazing at the starry sky

The vast starry sky gives birth to beauty at every moment, and those playful, twinkling stars are an interpretation of that beauty. Cartier imbues this beauty with a sense of flowing time, making it even more charming. Cartier possesses such magical enchantment; it reminds people to remember the passage of time while inspiring them to forget the flow of time. Surely every young person has gazed at the starry sky and harboured lofty ambitions. At the instant the stars twinkle, the black firmament fills our minds with myriad thoughts. When we look out into the universe of space and time, space and time are also looking back at us.

Listening quietly to the melodious, chime-like melody and gazing at the specks of starlight before my eyes, adorning the boundless darkness like night-shining pearls embedded in blue silk. As the hands and stars rotate, night and day continuously intertwine, telling of the ancient and romantic sentiments of art.

Negative space allows light to enter, easily drawing one into contemplation. The mystery clock is "mysterious" because its platinum and diamond hands appear to float above the transparent clock body, with no apparent connection to the movement. The hands are not directly connected to the movement, but are instead fixed to two crystal discs with serrated metal rims. The crystal discs are driven by the movement (located mostly at the bottom of the clock) and rotate at the speeds of the hour and minute hands respectively. To make the illusion even more convincing, the metal rims of the discs are concealed beneath the hour marker ring. The exquisitely crafted hands are both nimble and full of horological playfulness.

  Future, challenging limits

Time is inherently silent and slips away quietly, yet horology frames it within a tangible case. When you witness the passage of time, you lament how fast it flies, desiring even more to catch its fleeting light and shadow, thereby cherishing every single minute and second. The Cartier Time Art Exhibition guides us to experience not only Cartier's selected timepieces, incomparable craftsmanship, and culturally rich artistic crystallisation, but also Cartier's instantaneous creativity and the powerful force that awakens the human heart.

The "Gate of the Future" cleverly utilises light and transparent materials. In the design by internationally renowned designer Tokujin Yoshioka, simplicity, modernity, and Eastern philosophy are perfectly blended together, placing visitors inside a fantastical gateway leading to the future—the "gate" is composed of 15 ten thousand transparent fibres, with a total length of over 1000 kilometres. Layer upon layer of transparent fibres cascade from the top like a waterfall of time, with a beam of light guiding the audience towards the door of the future. It feels as though upon entering that very moment, the noisy world outside the exhibition hall is forgotten, and following the trajectory of light, one steps into the tunnel of time.

Passing through the Gate of the Future, an incomparably wonderful scene presents itself before the eyes, and impossibilities are turned into miracles born from then on: Cartier ID One and Cartier ID Two transcend the significance embodied by ordinary wristwatches; they are two "concept watches" launched by the Cartier ID project. ID takes its name from Innovation and Development, while also representing IDEAs. Through unique pieces, they express a vision and point a direction. They utilise brand-new materials, unprecedented manufacturing techniques, and entirely innovative design concepts. Among them, the most important is a bold and brilliant idea: making the air disappear, thus giving birth to the very first vacuum wristwatch, which simultaneously boasts a power reserve of up to 32 days.

Hidden behind the gate of the future is a world-shaking masterpiece. Life itself is a contest; the road ahead may be a smooth path strewn with flowers, or it may be filled with thorns. Greet every challenge with your endless wisdom and the courage to pursue the future. Everything is possible, and you will discover that "after passing through endless dark mountains and rivers where there seems to be no path, a village with willow trees and bright flowers appears before your eyes."
