  Appreciation of Cartier skeleton watches

Since 1912 when Cartier created its first Mystery Clock, Cartier has possessed a unique interpretive technique for how time is displayed. Mystery clocks utilise blind spots in vision and the principle of light refraction so that the hands directed by the mystery clock movement hidden beneath the crystal base appear to float mysteriously in the air, defying gravity. This exclusive and precious mystery watchmaking craft embodies Cartier's breaking of traditional watchmaking boundaries, analysing and creating entirely new ways of displaying time with its own original perspective. Cartier spares no effort in crafting the ultimate timekeeping treasures, whether it is skeleton watches that integrate the bridge and time-reading dial, or the Santos 100 triple-time watch with three dials on one face, or the concept watch ID ONE launched at SIHH this year featuring an innovative niobium-titanium material requiring no adjustment, the Tortue perpetual calendar skeleton complication watch, and the Rotonde Skeleton Flying Tourbillon watch floating in the air—all showcase Cartier's original spirit and exquisite watchmaking skills in high watchmaking through different skeletonised display methods.

Skeleton movements first appeared in the 18th century, when they were found in pocket watches. A skeleton watch is the art of removing as much metal as possible from mechanical components such as the mainplate, bridges, ratchet wheel, and barrel. The decoration of the bridges and mainplate typically involves engraving and piercing techniques to carve out representative leaf or floral patterns, and sometimes scenes such as hunting or concerts.

Watch artisans possess extraordinary skill, capable of arranging the bridges into the shape of Roman numerals when skeletonising the movement. This unprecedented technique allows the skeletonised movement to combine scale markers and Roman numerals in one, ensuring flawless legibility of time reporting while bringing an innovative design to the watch. At the same time, the movement bridges are made of nickel silver to enhance resistance. Cartier has also patented this innovative design.

Compared to the presentation method of traditional skeleton watches, to more exquisitely showcase the artistic craftsmanship between the static and dynamic states of the movement after a watch is completed, watchmakers often hollow out the blank areas of the dial without affecting functionality. Through the interaction of light and a sense of space, this presents a transparent visual effect, allowing the layers of the movement to be seen at a glance.

Santos Dumont skeleton watch, 18K white gold case, bridges and Roman numeral time display treated with open-working, octagonal sapphire crown and sapphire crystal glass and case back, blued-steel sword-shaped hands, equipped with Cartier manufacture 9611 manual-winding movement, 138 components including 20 jewels, 72 hours of power reserve, 18K white gold folding clasp and alligator leather strap. Guide price NT$1,420,000.

Before crafting a skeleton watch, Cartier broke away from traditional skeleton watch production methods, merging the dial and the movement so that the dial is not merely decorative but forms an integral part of the movement. Beginning with the release of the Santos 100 skeleton watch in 2009 featuring a brand-new patented 9611MC manual-winding movement, Cartier incorporated this novel concept of time display into its Fine Watchmaking collection. Unveiled earlier this year at SIHH, Cartier extended the use of the 9611 MC movement to another classic Santos Dumont watch. The ultra-thin streamlined design seems to fit seamlessly against the wearer's wrist, flowing and dissolving quietly on the arm, showcasing a spirited and untamed style distinct from the Santos 100.

Cartier Rotonde de Cartier flying tourbillon skeleton watch, equipped with calibre 9455MC, 18K white gold case, 45 mm diameter, semi-circular crown, 18K white gold, set with a cabochon sapphire, sapphire crystal glass, transparent sapphire crystal case back, 30 metres water resistance, black alligator leather strap, 18K white gold folding clasp with double-adjustable clasp, limited edition of 100 pieces, each individually numbered, 9455MC flying tourbillon skeleton movement, manufacture manual-winding mechanical movement bearing the Geneva Hallmark. Guide price NT$4,540,000.

Cartier's creativity in combining aesthetic decoration with exquisite watchmaking craftsmanship within fine watchmaking was further extended this year to high-complication and animal-motif jewellery watches. Alongside the Santos Dumont skeleton watch—which likewise integrates the bridges, movement and Cartier's classic Roman numeral display elements—the Rotonde de Cartier skeleton watch also delicately houses the Geneva Hallmark-certified 9455 MC movement featuring a flying tourbillon, which appears to break free from gravitational pull and glide effortlessly across the wrist. Meanwhile, the Pasha de Cartier pairs the brand's most iconic panther motif with Cartier's manufacture 9613 MC manual-winding movement, complemented by pavé-set diamonds, offering a fresh interpretation of animal jewellery watchmaking craftsmanship and skeleton aesthetics.

Santos Triple 100 watch, palladium case, heptagonal dual crowns set with sapphires, triple 18K white gold dial display, comprising a black dial with white Roman numerals, a white dial with black Roman numerals and an open-worked movement display dial, sword-shaped hands and luminescence treatment on the black dial Roman numerals, Cartier manufacture 9611 manual-winding movement, 18K white gold and palladium safety clasp, 30 metres water resistance, sapphire crystal glass and case back treatment, alligator leather strap, limited to 100 individually numbered pieces. Guide price NT$4,020,000.

At the 2008 SIHH, Cartier introduced the Santos Triple 100 tiger three-face watch featuring 18K white gold movable prisms that synchronise with the crown. Driven by a micro-gear system, they gradually change direction to present three distinct dial appearances. This remarkable and exclusive mechanism celebrates the wondrous aspects of time.

The concept of a single watch featuring three dial display methods is extended to the aesthetic presentation of skeleton watches. The prism-concept triple-face dial alternates between stylish black and white before transitioning to a fully open-worked movement layout, allowing the wearer to play with the dual-colour dials while simultaneously peering into the mechanical essence of fine watchmaking.

ID ONE concept watch, niobium-titanium alloy case, 46mm diameter, fabric strap, white 18K gold folding clasp, sapphire crystal glass and case back, Cartier workshop-crafted mechanical movement, automatic winding, maintenance-free. Hairspring made of Zérodur®, without regulator. Mono-bloc carbon crystal balance wheel, frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, carbon crystal pallet fork and escape wheel, without ruby jewels, twin barrels, power reserve of approximately 52 hours, mainplate coated with ADLC (Amorphous Diamond-Like Carbon), decorated with Côtes de Genève, tungsten rotor with ADLC coating.

Cartier has a long-standing tradition of using innovative materials. In addition to being the first to apply high-hardness, extremely rare platinum to jewellery creation in the early 20th century, Cartier was also the pioneer in introducing stainless steel into the watchmaking industry, creating a novel combination of precious metals and stainless steel and offering more choices in material selection for horology.

At this year's SIHH, Cartier showcased a concept watch crafted in the classic Ballon Bleu shape named ID ONE, applying niobium-titanium—a metal used in aerospace equipment—to this maintenance-free concept watch. The grey-black futuristic tone and skeletonised design highlight the depth of the classic Ballon Bleu dial. The entire concept watch seems to float within a futuristic, otherworldly interstellar dimension.

Tortue skeleton perpetual calendar watch, 18K white gold case (rose gold version also available), 45.6 case diameter, 18K white gold (or rose gold), octagonal crown set with a cabochon-cut sapphire crystal, hand-polished mineral crystal dial, crystal sapphire case back with skeletonisation, 30 metres water resistance, black alligator leather strap and 18K white gold (or rose gold) folding clasp, equipped with Cartier manufacture 9422 manual-winding movement, perpetual calendar display function, frequency of 28800/hour, 52 hours of power reserve, individually numbered movement, Cartier perpetual calendar automatic mechanical movement, case diameter 11 ½ lignes (i.e. 25.60 mm), total diameter 14 ¼ lignes (i.e. 32 mm), thickness 5.88 mm, ruby bearing count 33, movement component count 293, vibration frequency 8800 vibrations/hour, power reserve approx. 52 hours, individually numbered movement. Guide price white gold version NT$1,850,000, rose gold version NT$1,720,000.

In addition to constantly experimenting with and developing the use of new materials in watchmaking, Cartier spares no effort in preserving traditional watchmaking techniques. Equipped with the 9422MC manual-winding movement, the classic Tortue tonneau perpetual calendar skeleton complication watch represents a new addition to Cartier's rich collection of in-house fine watchmaking movements. This movement is Cartier's first in-house perpetual calendar automatic movement, featuring two outstanding and innovative functions: clear day and date display functions alongside a novel perpetual calendar display function. 9422MC The characteristics possessed by the movement are all presented on the prestigious skeletonised dial: the day of the week is indicated by a retrograde hand, the date is shown in a large aperture, and the month and year displays are positioned at the 12 o'clock position. Exquisitely crafted details make this timepiece the culmination of exceptional watchmaking artistry, perfectly matching its timeless and enduring silhouette.

The Tortue model was created in 1912 and subsequently became one of Cartier's most legendary complication watches of the twentieth 20s. The Geneva stripes on the base plate are a representative heritage mark honouring traditional high-watchmaking techniques; the layered skeletonised dial, combined with the Tortue model's unique mineral crystal surface curvature that requires manual polishing, gives the entire watch an extreme style of classical and modern aesthetics. Cartier still retains a portion of its workshops at the La Chaux-de-Fonds manufacture to pass on the manual polishing craftsmanship for mineral crystal surfaces, which is now quite rare in the watchmaking industry. The mineral crystal surface of the Tortue turtle-shaped model requires heating the mineral crystal to shape it into a perfect curve, and this curvature must rely on manual inspection methods, observing with the naked eye under a light sheet to see if it reaches the ideal curve. Only in this way can the turtle-shaped watch present a curvature different from standard machine-cut sapphire crystal mirrors. The curvature of the turtle-shaped model still cannot be achieved by machine cutting to this day. In today's watchmaking industry, which emphasises scientific processes, Cartier still retains this traditional, poetic watchmaking craft, aiming to achieve a perfect timepiece treasure and preserve this irreplaceable watchmaking craft from the non-mechanical era.

Pasha de Cartier 42 mm panther motif skeleton watch, case 18K rhodium-plated white gold case, diameter 42 mm, bezel set with round diamonds, dial 18K rhodium-plated white gold diamond-set movement bridges carved into a panther head pattern, sapphire crystal, 30 m water resistance, 100 feet, 3 bar, dark grey silk strap, pin buckle, 18K rhodium-plated white gold diamond-set buckle, movement 9613 MC manual-winding mechanical movement, total diamond weight 4.1 carats. Reference price approximately NT$3,350,000.

Cartier's skeleton watches return high watchmaking to the raw, refined, and ultimate emotional resonance, while also being a flawless presentation of Cartier's proprietary movement expertise and precise craftsmanship. Striving to pursue the creation of ultimate watchmaking craftsmanship and the elevation of endless aesthetic boundaries to highlight the truly extraordinary value of high watchmaking movements, every processing procedure is polished and handled manually by professional watchmakers. These include the chamfering and polishing of bridges and plates, satin-finishing of the case sides, vertical brushing of the front, and framing of the gears, etc. These minute parts can only be properly arranged and handled through the skilled hands of watchmakers after receiving professional training.

Cartier's skeleton watches require no other ornamentation; simply through the penetration of light, one can appreciate the watchmaking artistry presented by the movement. After chamfering and polishing, every side of the bridges, once their orientation has been configured through repeated trials, seamlessly connects with surrounding crystal components without any concern for frictional wear and tear. Under shimmering play of light and shadow, these operating components showcase the layered depth of the movement through the contrast between matte polished and mirror-finished original elements. Behind a glittering, razor-sharp fine timepiece, each watchmaking component is the result of master watchmakers meticulously carving and refining it for over 15 hours, making it a true work of art in every sense!
