A Mysterious Masterpiece: Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Astromystérieux
For over a century,Cartierexploring the allure of mysterious timepieces. The story begins with the Mystery Clock. These clocks are considered “mysterious” because their platinum and diamond hands appear to float above the transparent clock body, with no apparent connection to the movement. As praised in the 1925 issue of the fashion magazine 'La Gazette du Bon Ton', it is a “miracle of horological history”, a result of the collaboration between Louis · Cartier and the master watchmaker Maurice · Couet (who became an exclusive supplier to Cartier in 1885-1963, 1911). The first Mystery Clock was created in 1912 and named “Model A”. Maurice · Couet drew inspiration from clocks invented by Jean · Eugène · Robert-Houdin (Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin, 1805-1871), the great French magician and pioneer of modern magic. The principle he adopted and refined is based on a brilliant concept: the hands are not connected directly to the movement but are fixed to two glass discs with serrated metal edges. These discs are driven by the movement (mostly located at the base of the clock), rotating the hands to indicate hours and minutes. Today, Cartier introduces new mysterious timepieces that inherit and reinterpret this unique craft with a modern style.

A New Chapter in Mysterious Aesthetics
Following the Mysterious Hours and Double Mystery Tourbillon watches, Cartier presents the Astromystérieux tourbillon watch, featuring a central escapement that rotates with the axis of the hands. This marks a new chapter in Cartier's mysterious aesthetics. The secret lies in this ingenious structure: the movement is surrounded by a transparent, mysterious atmosphere, appearing to float within the case, unaffected by gravity. The space occupied by the movement's hidden gears is minimised, creating a breathtaking visual effect.
The 9462 MC movement is light and agile, with the central axis composed of the escapement, balance wheel, gear train, and barrel. The minute hand is set on an elongated extension of the movement, completing one rotation around the dial every hour. The movement's own trajectory is clearly visible, like a bright star crossing the night sky, suspended in the void with no visible connection. The movement components are layered and assembled on four rotating sapphire crystal discs, presenting a miraculous and mysterious scene.
The Astromystérieux tourbillon leaves one wondering: is this a new type of tourbillon? Its barrel rotates in sync with the escapement, and it appears to have no connection to the crown—so how is it wound? How is the time set? Cartier's master watchmakers have boldly innovated, allowing the Astromystérieux tourbillon watch to exude charm between motion and stillness, reality and illusion, with its production process having been granted multiple patents.
An Extraordinary New Tourbillon
The operating principle of the Astromystérieux celestial mysterious tourbillon is identical to that of a traditional tourbillon, with the rotating carriage driven by a fixed gear connected to the barrel. Unlike a traditional tourbillon, however, the carriage of the Astromystérieux celestial mysterious tourbillon revolves around a central axis once per hour. Its structure comprises not only the escapement and balance wheel, but also the gear train and barrel. A large-diameter sapphire crystal disc acts as the lower bridge of the tourbillon carriage, while two upper bridges secure the balance wheel and the escapement, gear train and barrel respectively. The tourbillon carriage itself displays the minutes as it rotates. With the Astromystérieux celestial mysterious tourbillon watch, Cartier elevates tourbillon aesthetics and craftsmanship to entirely new heights.

An ingeniously unique mysterious concept
The charm of the Astromystérieux celestial mysterious tourbillon watch does not stop there. A further three sapphire crystal discs are layered together, imbuing this timepiece with a truly distinctive appeal.
• One disc displays the hours
The hour disc is directly connected to the tourbillon disc to indicate the time. The other two larger discs carry the complex gear system. To protect these components, master watchmakers have fitted a novel shock-absorption system onto the rotating carriage to cushion against external impacts that may be sustained while wearing the watch.
• The mysterious disc winding system
The winding system for the Astromystérieux celestial mystery tourbillon is patented, with its function achieved via a sapphire crystal disc and the crown. This unique and ingenious disc only connects to the barrel during winding. To this end, Cartier specially designed a floating gear located between the crown stem and the winding disc. When the crown is turned, this gear shifts position, thereby connecting the crown to the winding disc. When the crown is at rest, the gear automatically disengages, disconnecting the two. The winding system of the Astromystérieux celestial mystery tourbillon also provides an ingenious protective function for the manual-winding mechanical movement. Thanks to a specially designed clutch system, the crown stem and barrel are protected from damage even in the event of over-winding.
• Time setting via a dual-purpose sapphire crystal disc
The lower disc, located at the base of the movement, plays a dual role: it provides power for the normal rotation of the tourbillon carriage, and when the crown is pulled out, it activates the patented time-setting system. Both functions are achieved via a unique lever mechanism, a groundbreaking high-end technology that is also patented.

During normal operation of the watch, the lever firmly locks the sapphire crystal disc. In this fixed position, the disc transmits power to the tourbillon carriage through the escapement. When the crown is pulled out to the time-setting position, the lever releases the lower sapphire crystal disc and the tourbillon carriage secured to the minute wheel, allowing time adjustment to be carried out.
The Rotonde de Cartier Astromystérieux celestial mystery tourbillon watch is crafted from 950 ‰ palladium, measures 43.5 millimetres in diameter, and is equipped with Cartier's new 9462 MC mystery movement. With this horological masterpiece, Cartier brilliantly interprets the classic —— mystery movement, a staple of high watchmaking since 1912, imbuing this extraordinary design with a new allure.
