Moonphase watchis a distinctive timepiece featuring a moonphase complication, allowing wearers to track the waxing and waning of the moon, which makes it popular among people with wide-ranging interests. However, adjusting a moonphase watch is rather more cumbersome than a standard watch. Here is an introduction to the methods for adjusting moonphase watches.

Adjusting a moon phase watch is relatively complex; unlike calendar functions, which can be corrected by referring to the current date, the best method is to follow the instructions in the manual. If you do not have the manual, use the full moon of the fifteenth day of the lunar month as a reference point. Align the moon graphic on the watch to the centre, then calculate the adjustment based on the current lunar date. For example, if you want to adjust to the second day of the lunar month and the previous lunar month ended on the 29, subtract fifteen from twenty-nine and add two. However, if it is a long lunar month with 30 days, simply add an extra 1 days. This is usually done using the quick-set button on the side of the watch case or by rotating the crown.

Where is the moonphase mechanism located?

Almost all the key features are displayed on the dial. The moon phase display is a small umbrella-shaped window, usually located at the twelve or six o'clock position, which shows the changes in the moon's phases: new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter.

How often should a moonphase watch be adjusted?

The lunar cycle takes approximately 29.5 days, so this type of watch uses 59 gear teeth to display the moon age from 0 to 29.5, creating an error of one day roughly every 33 months, which means it must be reset every 3 years.
