What are the techniques involved in crafting leather watch straps?
Generally speaking, watches with leather straps better showcase one's temperament. When discussing watchmaking techniques, we often emphasise dial production and movement finishing, but strap manufacturing also involves several distinct methods.

Strap Manufacturing Techniques
1, Cut-Edge Construction
This is a very traditional strap-making method where the outer and inner leathers are joined together without stitching the edges, which are then lacquered and sealed.
2, Hand-Turned Edges
This is a high-end luxury technique. The upper leather wraps around the strap lining and is finished with a backing leather.
3, Saddle Stitching
This is a purely hand-stitched technique consisting of two needles, which is ideal for stitching leather straps. Many luxury leather goods brands use this stitch, such as Hermès.
In addition, various strap manufacturers have their own exclusive secrets. For example, the German strap brand Eulux uses a technique called "Vollbugg", which is a rather complex Swiss process whose main advantage is securely shaping the strap, derived from the outer leather of the double-stitched strap. Therefore, straps processed with this technique have a remarkably long service life. Moreover, it is only applied to the processing of high-quality leather, such as tanned buffalo leather from European leather tanneries and ostrich leather raised on South African ranches. The inner leather, on the other hand, uses a comfortable, skin-friendly, waterproof and dirt-resistant special leather.
For a watch, crafting an elegant leather strap undoubtedly showcases a classic, subtle and timeless appeal.
The straps of some prestigious watches are made by specialist leather goods manufacturers, and the manufacturing craft can reflect a brand's image. Making watch straps requires precision and meticulousness; the requirements for making straps are very strict, and sometimes the tolerance must reach an accuracy of less than 1/10 mm. Furthermore, the texture of leather still has a certain degree of variability, unlike steel which is rigid.
