What should you note when setting the time on an Omega watch?
What do we need to look out for when setting the time on a prized Omega watch? Let us take a look below.
Notes on setting the time on Omega watches
1. Omega watches (day and date jumping: due to different mechanisms, they are divided into two types, fast and slow. The first type completes the date jump within ±5 minutes, while the second type completes the date jump within 3 hours.
2. If you encounter an Omega watch with a screw-down crown, do not pull it out forcefully. Please first unscrew the locked crown by turning it anticlockwise. After setting the time, turn the Omega crown clockwise and push it in to lock it, preventing water ingress.
3. If you need to adjust the date on an Omega watch with a calendar function, please first set the date to the day before the required date, and then adjust the date by turning the hour hand. The date will change when the hour hand passes midnight (12), which avoids confusing day and night when adjusting the date directly.
4. Do not adjust the date, day of the week, or moon phase on an Omega watch between 21:00PM and 3:00AM, as the calendar mechanism is operating during this period and gear engagement is at its lowest, and frequent operation will damage the internal components of the Omega watch.
Methods for authenticating replica Omega watches
1. Are the hallmarks clear and deeply stamped?
Omega watches, especially those in solid gold, feature numerous markings on the case, such as the scales pattern, 18k or 750 hallmarks, the Saint-Imier dog's head, or the 'Goddess of the Nation' female head hallmark. These marks are stamped very small and clearly, whereas replica watches often have coarse and blurred ones.
2. Do the production serial numbers match?
Every Omega watch has a unique 'ID' number, which is the case production serial number. It is usually engraved on the case back or on the back of one of the case lugs, consisting of a 8-digit number. If it is a mechanical watch, that 8-digit production serial number will also appear on the edge of the movement bridge, and the case production serial number matches that of the movement.
The serial number on a genuine watch is engraved deeply and clearly. If it is engraved on the case back, it will also follow the curve of the case back, meaning the numbers are arranged in an arc, whereas replica watches generally have them arranged in a straight horizontal line. The serial numbers on currently produced Omega watches are engraved on the back of one of the lugs, with the numbers being very small and densely packed—a technique that replica watches cannot yet replicate.
3. Are the hands smooth and bright?
The weakness of counterfeit watches lies in the hands. Although they are small components, they are not easily made to look alike. The surface plating on the hands of genuine Omega watches is extremely bright and smooth, with regular and slender shapes (especially the second hand), and the luminescence on the hands matches the colour on the dial. If you can make a comparison, it is not difficult to spot the differences.
