What does the day/night display function on a watch mean?
The day/night display on a watch is a relatively common function, but some friends might not be very familiar with this feature yet. Let us take a look at it below.

Day/night display function
Most watch hands and graduations are designed for a 12-hour system, meaning the day is split into two 12-hour halves. We rise with the sun and rest when it sets, and as long as there is daylight to guide us, reading the time correctly is effortless. Under certain circumstances, however, a 12-hour system can prove inconvenient—such as during prolonged periods spent away from natural light, when crossing multiple time zones rapidly on international flights, or when adjusting and setting the watch date. Consequently, some timepieces feature a day-night indicator, which is essentially a dial that completes one full rotation every 24 hours, functioning much like a 24-hour indicator. Other variations exist: most commonly a window opened on the dial, with simpler versions displaying AM and PM letters, more illustrative ones depicting the sun and moon (often called sun-and-moon displays), or alternatively a disc divided half in black and half in white.
Cartier Day and Night Dual Time Zone Watch
Cartier released the Rotonde de Cartier 42 mm watch at the 2014 Watches and Wonders exhibition, hailed as a pioneering creation within its collection of small complication men's watches, blending a dual time zone, day-night indicator, large date display window, and small seconds subdial.
The fully integrated, highly complicated new 1904-FU MC automatic winding movement is the culmination of years of research and development by the Cartier watchmaking workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds. This movement uses just a single push-button to adjust all complications, representing a breakthrough achievement in Cartier watchmaking. This dual accomplishment brings a fresh perspective to the field of complications, allowing multiple functions to be displayed within a compact 42 mm diameter space while balancing elegant aesthetics with high technical performance.
This timepiece retains Roman numeral hour markers, a cabochon crown, pomme hands, and a minute track, showcasing a majestic classical style through Cartier's signature design elements. On the dial, 18K rose gold or 18K white gold contrasts sharply with silver sunray finishes or blue guilloché patterns, further accentuating the watch's elegant character.
