How to Identify Longines Bronze Cases
Today we bring you some insights regarding Longines—Longineshow to identify bronze cases.
Identification of Bronze Cases
Watch cases are categorised by material into gold, steel, aluminium, brass, titanium, alloy, plastic, wood, and more. The material we most commonly encounter, use, and select is all-steel for cases and bracelets. However, you may not know that many watches advertised as having all-steel cases are actually made of brass (also referred to as semi-steel cases). Brass cases (including bracelets) have a manufacturing cost several times lower than all-steel watches, leaving a much larger profit margin. Consequently, many merchants exploit this point, passing off brass as steel and using extremely low prices as bait to attract buyers. Therefore, a brief introduction on how to distinguish between all-steel and semi-steel watches is provided below:
a. The plating of an all-steel case is bright yet subdued, with rounded case edges and no sharp feel. The plating of a brass case is bright yet whitish, with sharp edges on the back of the lugs, where circular lathe marks left by cutting tools are typically clearly visible. These marks vary in depth and size, arranged unevenly and loosely. In contrast, the marks on an all-steel case are delicate, uniform, closely and neatly arranged.
b. Gently scrape along a small section of the lug edges (this can be tested on the inner side of the lug back) using a small blade; if the interior reveals a yellow colour, it is a brass case.
c. Brass cases have poorer corrosion resistance; if improperly maintained, they are prone to fading (turning yellow or red), bubbling, or peeling of the plating after a period of use.
