Sibling Rivalry: Is the Rolex Submariner Better or the Tudor Black Bay?

RolexPublished
Belonging to the same parent company, Rolex and Tudor are frequently compared by watch enthusiasts, much like Lexus and Toyota under the Toyota Motor umbrella. For a long time, components such as cases and crowns were shared between both brands (in the early days, even trademarks remained unchanged, with Tudor crowns bearing the Rolex logo). However, regarding movements, Rolex utilises its in-house 3 series automatic calibre, whereas Tudor relies on ETA2824 movements.

Belonging to the same corporate family, Rolex and Tudor are frequently compared by watch enthusiasts, functioning much like Lexus and Toyota. Historically, both brands shared components such as cases and crowns (in early years, even the trademarks were unmodified, with Tudor crowns displaying the Rolex logo). Yet in terms of movements, Rolex fits its in-house 3 series automatic movement, while Tudor uses ETA2824 calibres.

However, with Tudor's recent strong momentum, its product designs have become bolder, more innovative, and aesthetically striking. Following the Swatch Group's announcement to reduce third-party supply of ETA movements, Tudor also began developing its own in-house calibres.

Traditionally, Rolex and Tudor timepieces have maintained a distinct price gap, cleanly segmenting their consumer bases. However, as Tudor's design aesthetics have improved substantially, many buyers looking past price alone are increasingly leaning towards Tudor's more versatile and modern styling.

To illustrate this, two of the most popular models from each brand are compared: the Rolex Submariner No-Date reference 114060, and the Tudor Heritage Black Bay reference 79220R. The prices differ considerably. Yet even putting the price advantage aside, the vintage-inspired Tudor Black Bay stands its ground effortlessly against Rolex's timeless, iconic design elements.

In terms of craftsmanship, Tudor is by no means inferior to Rolex; the primary differences lie in brand prestige and movement reputation.
