Four Key Highlights of the New Rolex Sea-Dweller
Introduction: Marking the 50th anniversary of the watch's debut,Rolexintroduced the new Sea-Dweller Ref. 126600. The new timepiece is packed with highlights: red lettering, a cyclops lens, a larger case size, and a more robust movement, making it well worth a closer look.
Highlight One: Red Lettering
The most distinctive feature of the new Sea-Dweller is the 'Sea-Dweller' inscription rendered in red on the dial, recreating the classic design of the first-generation model.
Remember the Rolex Double Red Sea-Dweller that fetched $91,000 USD at auction? Featuring two lines of red text on the dial, the Rolex Double Red Sea-Dweller is not only a timepiece but also prime evidence of human technological innovation extending into the exploration of the deep blue sea.
The inaugural Sea-Dweller was launched in 1967 under reference Ref.1665. Equipped with the Cal.1575 automatic mechanical movement, it offered a water resistance of 500 metres / 1,650 feet, which was later increased to 610 metres / 2,000 feet. It featured a revolutionary helium escape valve for the time, making it suitable for mixed-gas diving environments, and was initially not sold to the public. The first-generation Sea-Dweller dial featured 'Sea-Dweller' and 'Submariner 2000' printed in red. Collectors affectionately nickname it the 'Double Red'.
Highlight Two: Larger Case Size
In an era dominated by large case sizes, the increased dimensions certainly qualify as a notable feature.RolexThis time, the case size of the new Sea-Dweller has been unprecedentedly increased to 43 mm. Moving from 40 mm to 43 mm is a significant change, which is quite rare for Rolex. Rolex made this adjustment not out of sudden 'radicalism', but due to objective factors.
Highlight Three: Cyclops Lens
UnderstandingRolexFriends familiar with the Sea-Dweller will know thatRolexthe date window of the Sea-Dweller at the 3 o'clock position is a standard date window, whereas the Submariner uses a cyclops lens, which is a date window with a magnifying lens attached. This time, Rolex has equipped the new Sea-Dweller with this classic cyclops lens element. This is the first time a cyclops lens has appeared on a Sea-Dweller model, making it quite a talking point. There is also an interesting tale regarding the origin of the Rolex cyclops lens.
Legend has it that Hans Wilsdorf's second wife suffered from an eye condition, often struggling to read the date clearly and needing to put on her glasses every time. Mr Hans Wilsdorf was troubled by this as well. Mr Hans Wilsdorf had a habit of spending two hours in the bathtub every morning. 'That is where he would find his best ideas,' his widow remarked. Once, whilst in the bathroom, he noticed a drop of water fall precisely onto the crystal above the 3 o'clock position on his watch, miraculously magnifying the numerals significantly. Inspired by this, Mr Wilsdorf later created the Datejust featuring a date magnifier, and Rolex subsequently applied this design to other models, such as the Submariner.
Highlight Four: More Robust Movement
As early as the introduction of the upgraded 3235 movement in 3135, watch enthusiasts began anticipating when it would appear in Rolex's diving watches. This year, Rolex has placed it in the new Sea-Dweller, living up to expectations. The aforementioned objective factor of the 43 mm size was constrained by the calibre of this new movement. Furthermore, the 3235 is even more powerful than the 3135; it holds 14 patents, achieves an accuracy of -2 to +2 seconds per day, and has earned the Superlative Chronometer certification established by Rolex in 2015. The power reserve has also been increased from the previous 50 hours to 70 hours, adding almost a full day of power reserve. Additionally, the movement performs exceptionally well in terms of magnetic and shock resistance, backed by a worldwide 5-year Rolex guarantee, marked by a green seal.
