The "Red Submariner" models in Rolex history
RolexRolex has always held a supreme position in watchmaking and excels at utilizing colour. Today we round upRolexthe famous "Red Submariner" references among them.
Ref. 1680:
Born in the 40s and 50s, the Submariner series features distinct dial characteristics: a Cyclops lens, large luminescent hands, a 15-minute safety diving scale, and a high-contrast dial. However, not all Submariners feature these attributes. After all, Submariners produced before 1962 had no calendar feature until the 1680 in 1968 introduced a date aperture with a water resistance rating of 200 metres;
Ref.168000:
Produced in 1987, it served as a transitional model between 16800 and 16610, with a production run of only around 9 months. It remains one of the most beloved Submariners among modern Rolex enthusiasts. The triple zero version is particularly special; seasoned collectors note: "Its case back is still stamped 16800, its bracelet is still 93150, and the extra 0 sits at the shoulder near 12 o'clock. It was also the very first Submariner model to replace 316L steel with 904L steel." It continues to be powered by the 3035 calibre.
Ref.16610LN:
Red Submariners were mainly produced around 1970. The unique red "Submariner" lettering made them stand out from the standard production 1680 models. As rarity drives value, the collectible worth of the Red Submariner soared alongside its scarce production numbers. Among Red Submariners, a very small minority feature the metre depth rating listed before feet, such as 200m=660ft, affectionately referred to by collectors as "MF" (Meters First).
Both red dial and red text versions can be broadly referred to as Red Submariners. From their appearance, it is evident that the red text models came earlier and carry higher value. Should you ever be fortunate enough to encounter an MF Red Submariner, do not hesitate to add it to your collection immediately.

Featuring a 40 mm dial nicknamed the "Ruby", it is powered byRolexan automatic mechanical 3135 sweeping seconds calibre equipped with a quickset date feature. Standard quartz movements feature ticking seconds, whereas sweeping seconds movements are widely considered a blessing for watch enthusiasts who prefer quiet operation. Based on user experience, it is advisable to choose a brand with mature and stable movement technology. Less established sweeping movements often suffer from timekeeping inaccuracies or sudden failures, though Rolex movements are naturally free from such concerns.
