The story between Tudor and Rolex, taking you into their world
Introduction: For a long time, many watch enthusiasts have been puzzled as to why their Tudor watches haveRolexlogo on the back? Today, we will explain in detail the relationship between the two.
(a) Case: Tudor uses a Rolex Oyster case, and is engraved on the case back withRolexthe words, whereasRolexits own watches are not engraved with such text (the Sea-Dweller being an exception). However, Tudor uses 316L stainless steel, while Rolex uses the tougher 904 steel. In addition, many Tudor crowns also feature the Rolex crown logo.
(b) Movement: Tudor does not use Rolex movements (at least not for long periods); Tudor uses ETA movements.
(c) Trademark: The Tudor brand is also owned by Rolex, positioning it as an entry-level brand within the company. In the past, Tudor mostly imitated Rolex designs, ranging from the Submariner and Day-Date to the Oyster Prince DateJust, among other models. Tudor also had some unique models, such as the Mini-Sub, though these were exceptions. Recently, they have also begun to break away from tradition and Rolex's traditional manufacturing style to create watches completely distinct from Rolex, such as the Tiger Chronograph signed after Tiger Woods became their ambassador, though Woods has since switched to endorsing TAG Heuer.
(d) Controversy: The California dial and Rolex Tudor dials are refinished dials and command low prices on eBay. There has never been a Tudor watch featuring prominent Rolex lettering and crown logos; these watches are all modified in an attempt to sell them on eBay for about twice their pre-refurbishment value. As for the Tudor Submariner, there is little controversy, apart from some believing that Mercedes hands on certain Submariners might have been replaced with military-style hands to increase value. At least one entirely counterfeit Tudor Submariner has been seen, so caution is advised.
(e) Collectability: As a member of the Rolex family, they are more expensive than other brands using similar ETA movements. Some Tudors were issued as military watches, making these specific pieces collectible. Older Tudors featuring the rose logo are more collectible than newer Tudors with the shield logo. Military-style hands are more collectible than Mercedes hands.
This is the story between Tudor and Rolex, which explains why Tudor watch case backs feature the Rolex logo.
