Introduction: Why vintageRolexcollecting remains full of risks? Whilst modernRolexposes few problems?

ModernRolexWhy is it not much of a problem?

AlthoughRolexis one of the two giants in the watch industry, compared with Patek Philippe,Rolexhas a remarkably large output. Consequently, a vast number of Rolex watches circulate worldwide. In some casinos, Rolexes can be directly exchanged for cash, a privilege exclusive to Rolex and not extended to other watches. Why is collecting vintage Rolexes fraught with risk, yet modern Rolexes present relatively few issues? Because the immense circulation of modern Rolexes has established a well-known, transparent market value and set of rules. We can generally easily grasp the market value of almost any Rolex. Of course, prices fluctuate slightly up and down, but the market remains very stable.

By looking at the reference number, one can basically tell the retail price and roughly what it goes for on the secondary auction market. Conversely, seeing the price reveals the specific reference, such as whether it is 16610 or 116610, making everything highly transparent. Therefore, buying and selling Rolexes is unlike niche watches which lack reference pricing, causing valuations, discounts, and transaction prices to drift and remain uncertain (many high-end niche watches are valued on paper but impossible to trade). Anyone trading Rolexes will never price a modern Rolex outside its market value range; everyone understands the market, and no one deviates from the expected rules. Consequently, you will not buy an 'especially expensive' Rolex, nor will you buy an 'especially cheap' one. This is arguably the most impressive aspect of Rolex.

  So what else needs attention?

Everything we are discussing now concernsRolexgenuine watches, excluding replicas. The massive volume of modernRolexcirculating globally generally presents no major issues. The watches are genuine because any experienced watch enthusiast picking up a counterfeitRolexcan instantly tell it is a fake; no matter how well a replica is made, the movement cannot be replicated. A genuine Rolex 3135 movement possesses entirely distinct characteristics compared with ETA or Citizen replica movements, which can be distinguished by simply setting the time or giving it a shake (anyone in the watch business would lose their standing in the community if they sold a fake). Below, I want to share some issues to watch out for with genuine Rolexes.

The first is replaced bracelets. Since some people have their bracelets adjusted after buying a Rolex and subsequently lose the removed links, when the watch later re-enters the market with a shortened bracelet, sellers often try to source and complete the links beforehand. There have been instances where aftermarket replacement links turned out to be counterfeit, only discovered once the watch was sent to the official service centre. Therefore, always inquire about the bracelet length (and keep the removed links).

The second is modified Rolexes, as some undergo aftermarket diamond-setting by third parties. Because factory diamond-set Rolexes have very high retail prices, especially with diamond bezels, some people replace non-diamond bezels with gemstone ones or add a ring of gems. These aftermarket diamond-set Rolexes are common on the secondary market. Most traders will inform buyers, but what if you encounter someone who does not know and focuses solely on the lower price? Firstly, the setting quality of aftermarket diamond-set Rolexes falls far short of factory standards.

The third is a very vulnerable spot prone to knocks, which requires careful inspection. The sapphire crystal on a Rolex is domed and sits higher than the bezel. This protruding crystal is extremely susceptible to knocks, which leave behind small chips and permanent damage. While scratches on the case can be polished out, the crystal must be replaced, and a replacement is not cheap—even more so if you encounter a Milgauss with a green crystal. Therefore, run your finger around the edge of the crystal first to check for any unevenness. Any roughness inspected under a magnifying glass will reveal a small chip. Do not buy a watch with a damaged crystal; while it may seem cheaper now, you will have lost several thousand before even wearing it. Combined with the depreciation upon resale, this tiny chip will cost you dearly.
