Precision and Durability: An Overview of the Rolex Explorer Collection
RolexThe Explorer collection, as the name suggests, is a watch specifically developed for explorers. So, what capabilities does the Explorer collection have to ensure the watch can operate precisely in extreme environments, and what changes has the Explorer collection undergone since its launch in 1953? Today, Aibiaoxian luxury watch mall will provide a detailed overview to help you better understand the Rolex Explorer collection.
The Explorer collection discussed today mainly includes the Explorer I and Explorer II series. In Rolex's official collection, these are 2 independent series, but because they are both called the Explorer collection, we will discuss them together today. Both the Explorer I and Explorer II series have old and new models. Most of what we can buy on the market now are the new Explorer I and new Explorer II watches. What is the difference between the Explorer I and Explorer II, and what are the differences between the new and old models? Today, Watch Home will explain them to you in detail.
Explorer I Watch

The first Explorer I series watch
Rolex launched the first Explorer series watch in 1953 to commemorate the first explorer to successfully climb Mount Everest. Since its debut in 1953, it has become an iconic classic watch.

Rolex Explorer I series 114270-78690 watch
The older Explorer model, with a diameter of 36 mm, features hour markers at 3, 6, and 9 that all utilise luminescence. The Chromalight display provides long-lasting luminescence, which lasts approximately twice as long as standard luminescent material. The Rolex Explorer remains precise even under extreme conditions, maintaining accurate timekeeping at temperatures as low as 50 degrees Celsius . It is undoubtedly the watch of choice for explorers.

Rolex Explorer 214270-77200 watch
This is the new Explorer model launched by Rolex in 2010. The new Rolex Explorer features several changes compared to the previous version. Firstly, the case diameter has increased from 36 mm to 39 mm, aligning with the trend for larger watches. Secondly, the luminescence on the 3, 6, and 9 hour markers has been removed. Additionally, the movement has been updated with a new shock absorber and hairspring, changing from the 3130 calibre to the 3132 calibre.
Explorer II collection

Rolex Explorer II 16570 white dial watch
The Explorer II is a new model launched by Rolex in 1971. The watch was originally designed with a 24-hour hand primarily to assist polar explorers facing polar day or polar night conditions; the 24-hour display is exceptionally practical. This design can also be used to display a second time zone.

Rolex Explorer II 216570-77210 white dial watch
The new Explorer II does not look significantly different from the older model; it is a redesigned version launched by Rolex in 2011, with the new case size increased to 42 mm. The dial is equipped with a Chromalight luminescent display, ensuring the watch is clear and easy to read in any environment. Designed for extreme conditions, this watch fully embodies Rolex's enduring connection with world exploration.
The Explorer collection consists of these main styles, with further variations between black and white dials. I would like to share my understanding of their respective differences and positioning. Firstly, regarding the main differences between the old Explorer I and the new Explorer I: compared to the old model, the new Explorer I has an increased case diameter, growing from the original 36 mm to 39 mm. Because the case diameter increased while the hands did not, the hands on the new Explorer I appear relatively short, particularly the minute hand. Furthermore, the luminescent 3, 6, and 9 hour markers on the dial have been removed and replaced with stainless steel markers. Internally, the movement has been upgraded from the 3130 calibre to the 3132 calibre, featuring a new shock absorber and hairspring. The old Explorer I is priced at 42300, while the new Explorer I is priced at 51100; although it is more expensive, I would recommend the new Explorer I regardless of the price.
The new Explorer II features several detailed changes compared to the old model. Firstly, the case diameter has increased from 40 mm to 42 mm. Visually, the second time zone hand has changed from red to orange and is now thicker. The movement has also been upgraded, equipped with Rolex's patented blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. In terms of price, the old Explorer II is listed at 56300, while the new Explorer II is listed at 64200.
Summary: The Explorer collection is a very important series for Rolex, specifically developed for explorers, capable of maintaining precise timekeeping even at temperatures of minus fifty degrees.
