Beijing time, 11 month 18 day news, during the final tournament of the year, the CME Group Tour Championship, American golfer Stacy Lewis attended the Rolex Awards Ceremony and personally accepted the “ Rolex Player of the Year award ”. Lewis became the first American golfer to receive this honour in nearly 20 years.

That day, Stacy Lewis received the trophy symbolising the “ Player of the Year ” from LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame member Beth Daniel. Notably, Beth Daniel was the 1994 and most recent American to win the “ Player of the Year ” award.

“ I now think back to 10 years ago when I sat in my doctor's office and told her I needed back surgery, thinking back then that I would never be able to play golf again. And a decade later, I actually won Player of the Year; it just feels so crazy, it feels surreal. ” Stacy Lewis was a little overwhelmed with emotion, “ the people who can win Player of the Year are incredibly talented golfers who have to maintain great form all the time. I have improved step by step, and I am extremely happy with this outcome, having overcome every obstacle ”.

Stacy Lewis successfully secured the “ Player of the Year ” honour after completing the Lorena Ochoa Invitational last week. Lewis won four titles this year and finished in the top ten 16 times.

After winning back-to-back titles at the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic and the ShopRite LPGA Classic in June, Lewis climbed to third in the world rankings, becoming the highest-ranked American golfer. Following a runner-up finish the very next week at the Wegmans LPGA Championship, her ranking rose to second, setting a new career high.

In September, Stacy Lewis completed the “ Alabama tournament grand slam ” by winning the Navistar LPGA Classic, solidifying her lead in the “ Player of the Year ” race. At that point, her only remaining competitor was South Korean star Inbee Park, who had finished in the top ten in 10 consecutive tournaments.

After coming from behind to win the Mizuno Classic three weeks ago, Lewis extended her “ Player of the Year ” points lead to 58 points. With only two events remaining, Lewis was within touching distance of the honour. Last week, after finishing tied for fourth at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, Lewis officially wrapped up the “ Player of the Year ” award ahead of schedule, becoming the first American to win this honour since Beth Daniel in 1994.

“ This is just incredible, especially given the stressful past few months. ” Stacy Lewis said, “ I've been reflecting on how I got through the past year. It's just crazy. To be the Tour's Player of the Year, I don't even know how to express my feelings ”.

The previous two Americans to win “ Player of the Year ”, Betsy King and Beth Daniel, both witnessed Lewis lifting the trophy.

“ I am so happy for Lewis ”, said 1993 Player of the Year “ Beth King ”, “ I know she has played exceptionally well all year and won four titles; she thoroughly deserves this honour. Lewis has always worked extremely hard, and she is a positive golfer who can serve as a great role model for the younger generation ”.

“ I couldn't be happier to see Lewis win this award ”, said 1994 Player of the Year “ Beth Daniel ”, “ she has the ability to stay at the very top of the Tour for a long time. High expectations were placed on her ever since her college days, and she has shown fantastic potential this year ”.

Stacy Lewis finished first at the 2008 LPGA Qualifying School at the end of the year and became a full LPGA member the following season. In 2011, Lewis secured her first LPGA victory by defeating defending champion Yani Tseng by three strokes at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, and her career earnings surpassed one million dollars. 19 months later, after winning the Mizuno Classic, Lewis's total career earnings crossed the 400 USD mark.

“ My goal this year was simply to win a tournament and become the highest-ranked American golfer. Now I have achieved both of those wishes. ” Lewis said, “ It wasn't until the middle of the year that I realised I had a chance to contend for ‘ Player of the Year ’. Back then I just thought I might have a shot, and I never imagined I'd actually reach this goal now ”. At the end of this season, Lewis's world ranking will sit firmly in second place, just behind world number one Yani Tseng.

During the awards ceremony that evening, South Korean golfer So Yeon Ryu also accepted the “ Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year ” trophy. In fact, Ryu had already secured this honour following the Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship.

Furthermore, the race for the 2012 season LPGA “ money list title ” is also all but decided. As of last week, Inbee Park held a commanding lead at 2,266,638 USD, while second-placed Stacy Lewis had total season earnings of 1,863,956 USD, trailing the current leader Inbee Park by 402,682 USD. With Stacy Lewis out of the running for the title, the South Korean Inbee Park has virtually secured the “ money list ” crown.

In addition, Park In-bee and Stacy Lewis emerged victorious in the competition for the “Vare Trophy”, which represents the lowest annual scoring average. The award will be presented after the conclusion of the CME Group Tour Championship.

At that time, six players who secured their maiden LPGA victories will also be presented with their respective awards. These six players are Jessica Korda (ISPS Handa Women's Australian Open winner), Azahara Munoz (Sybase Match Play Championship winner), Shanshan Feng (Wegmans LPGA Championship winner), Brittany Lang (Manulife Financial LPGA Classic winner), So Yeon Ryu (Jamie Farr Toledo Classic winner), and Mika Miyazato (Safeway Classic winner).
