can luxury watches appreciate in value?

i do not know when it started, but there is a rumour circulating that watches can retain their value or even appreciate. i find this quite ridiculous. are they treating watches like the housing market?
actually, most watches cannot even retain their value, let alone appreciate. buying a watch in a shopping mall without losing money is impossible, otherwise, retailers would not survive. economically savvy individuals understand the stakes well. much like luxury cars, domestic and overseas prices are worlds apart. however, with the internet now well-developed and numerous channels for buying watches, people have ways to source items from overseas purchasing agents. therefore, an ordinary second-hand luxury watch has no possibility of appreciating, and holding its value is difficult. of course, things do not happen without a reason, as there are indeed watches that can appreciate. those commemorative or limited editions from major brands, or those using exceptionally rare materials, are produced in small quantities and are difficult to reproduce. rarity increases value, which is why the prices of watches at those auctions can reach ever-higher records.
some people brag all day about how some tycoon bought a commemorative Patek Philippe worth over ten million a few years ago, and today it is worth tens of millions! they talk as if that tycoon were their father. but please, that person bought a watch worth tens of millions, and it was a limited edition. you must realise that limited editions are not something you can just buy with money; every brand has VIP customer service personnel, and those people are the true patrons. besides, could you pull out over ten million to buy a watch? if so, please leave your contact details and let us be friends.
