Is your watch truly water-resistant? Not necessarily

(1) A water-resistant watch is not necessarily resistant to water vapour
A water-resistant watch is not waterproof under all circumstances. Water vapour and water are not the same concept; water vapour consists of gas molecules. Due to the limitations of watch materials and the principle of thermal expansion and contraction, temperature variations will have a direct impact on the watch itself. Although it is called a water-resistant watch, consumers should try to avoid taking their watch into the bathroom when showering. Even if the watch does not come into contact with water droplets in the bathroom, the influence of materials and temperature, combined with the active movement of gas molecules, can cause molecules to breach the defence lines of the water-resistant watch and directly penetrate as water vapour.
(2) Ageing of the water-resistant rubber gasket
Regardless of whether it is a professional diving watch or a general water-resistant watch that repeatedly emphasises outstanding water-resistant performance after prolonged exposure to sun and rain without frequent maintenance and cleaning, grime and dust will gradually age the water-resistant rubber gasket and even the case, seriously impairing water-resistant performance. Moreover, the water-resistant guarantee for most brand diving watches is typically only1years, therefore, regular inspection is extremely important.
(3) significantly reduced water resistance after servicing
following a watch service, the watchmaker may not have fitted the case waterproof sealing gasket properly, or may have damaged it, or the sealing gasket may have reached the end of its service life and could not be restored to use once opened.therefore, after a watch service or simply replacing the battery, the water resistance of the watch may be reduced.
daily maintenance of water-resistant watches is essential:
(1) waterproof rubber rings are prone to ageing and deterioration and should be replaced regularly, or during every repair.
(2) damaged dial glass should be replaced promptly.
(3) do not leave the watch in high temperatures (ten60℃) and low temperatures (-10℃) for extended periods.
(4) prevent chemical substances from coming into contact with the watch, otherwise, it will affect the case and waterproof rubber ring, reducing water resistance.
(5) wipe off any moisture on the watch promptly.
(6) do not operate the crown in water or when the watch is damp to prevent water from entering the movement.
