Every trade has its own jargon, which we call professional terminology. The watch industry has many such terms. As the number of watch enthusiasts grows, it is helpful to understand some basic terminology, which will be of great assistance for future purchases and beyond. Belowwatch websiteswe will introduce some common terms to help you become an expert in minutes.

  Accuracy

Timepieces are among the oldest inventions; as early as 1300 years ago, people invented the sundial as a simple tool for keeping time. This can be considered the most primitive form of a clock. Timepieces are mechanical devices that require high precision. If a movement gains or loses 30 seconds a day, mathematically, the error is 0.035%, meaning the accuracy is 99.965%. It is known that officially certified chronometers must have an error rate lower than 0.005%.

  Adjustment

WatchSometimes issues may arise, such as an incorrect date display or the calendar changing at noon; in these cases, the watch requires adjustment. Adjustment parameters include temperature, position, and isochronism. High-end timepieces usually undergo 8 procedures involving cold, heat, and 5 positions. Temperature adjustment generally refers to 4°C, 20°C, and 38°C.

  Power reserve

Nowadays, many mechanical watches feature a power reserve indicator. What is the purpose of a power reserve? It indicates the energy status of the mainspring and the remaining running time. Between two consecutive windings, the running time (usually 24 hours for a standard watch, or 7 days for a clock) typically provides 10-16 hours of operation.

  Cabinotiers

Cabinotiers were common in Geneva during the 18 and 19 centuries, as their attics served as their workshops. They were independent watchmakers and masters of these attic workshops, and naturally, they were quite wealthy. Cabinotiers were the pillars of the Genevan watchmaking industry; it is because of their existence that the city became the capital of watchmaking and earned its reputation as the home of horology.
