Recommended Panerai Watch Models Worth Acquiring
Before diving into the recommendations, let us familiarise ourselves with some background on Panerai.
Panerai Luminor
The Luminor takes its name from the tritium-based luminescent material Luminor, as the radioactive safety of tritium far exceeded that of previously used Radium. Panerai patented its Luminor material in 1949, replacing unstable and toxic radium compounds. The Luminor design dates back to around 1950, when Panerai engineered a highly distinctive feature in its efforts to enhance the water resistance of its watches. The Luminor crown-protection device consists of a semi-circular bridge combined with a locking lever. When the lever is in the closed position, it exerts pressure on the crown to form an effective seal, preventing water from entering the watch. This design has been continuously used across the Luminor collection and remains a quintessential modern hallmark of Panerai!

The Luminor case is arguably the most representative style of Panerai watches, and the Luminor is commonly associated with the “ Panerai ”, with this PAM000 likewise equipped with the signature semi-circular crown-protection device that sets it apart. The lugs are traditional in style, though their shape and dimensions have been refined. The strap is secured via a screw bar (rather than a spring bar), making strap replacement easier. The robust and substantial Luminor features a highly masculine aesthetic, earning the affection and admiration of numerous watch enthusiasts! Panerai has also won favour with stars such as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jason Statham!
Panerai Radiomir
The name Radiomir is derived from “Radium”, which was the radioactive luminescent substance originally used to make the dial visible in very dark places. In 1938, the Italian Navy (also known as 'Marina Militare' ’) commissioned Panerai to manufacture water-resistant watches that maintained excellent legibility, – and thus the Radiomir watch was born. The Radiomir featured large hands and an easy-to-read Arabic numeral dial, combined with a 47 mm case. Crucially, Rolex manufactured these water-resistant watches for the Italian Navy on behalf of Panerai until 1956.

A cushion-shaped, full-bodied case paired with an onion-shaped crown. The vintage Radiomir of the past was modified from pocket watches, with the prototype Radiomir formed by welding wire lugs to both ends of a pocket watch and then polishing them. The lugs used to secure the strap were welded shut. The strap was sewn directly onto them, unlike today's detachable lugs. This early detail looks great and carries historical significance. Modern Radiomir models feature four screws underneath to secure the lugs. Changing the strap is easily done with a 1.4mm flat-head screwdriver, making it much more convenient than before.
Compared to the Luminor, the Radiomir case is generally more suited to formal wear. The cases of modern Radiomir watches are no longer limited to stainless steel. They are available in titanium, composite materials, ceramic, yellow gold, white gold, and more.
Panerai Mare Nostrum
The name is derived from the Latin phrase “mare nostrum”, which the Romans used to describe the Mediterranean Sea. In 1880, the Italian Nationalist Party used the term 'mare nostrum' to rally the revival and reconstruction of the Italian colonial empire. Finally, during the Second World War, this term was also used in Mussolini's fascist propaganda, and the Mare Nostrum watch was created during this period. Designed in 1943, the Mare Nostrum was originally intended for use by Italian Navy personnel on deck. Unfortunately, due to historical events at the time, the Mare Nostrum was not developed further and production ceased.

Featuring a “tonneau-shaped” main body, the lugs are thick and rounded. The bezel is flat, and the outer ring features small teeth. Some models have graduations, while others do not. The crown is equipped with a screw-down mechanism and cylindrical pushers. With a 46mm case diameter, a replica material case, and multi-function chronograph capabilities, it is water-resistant to 50 metres, meeting daily wear requirements.
