In recent years, with the expansion of the watchmaking industry, the demand for leather straps has maintained sustained high growth. Globally, our domestic market has the strongest demand, with alligator and ostrich leather being the most popular. Among animal leathers, alligator leather is the most familiar and beloved. Aside from alligator leather, several other animal leathers are also used as materials for watch straps.

  1. Alligator Leather

The most prominent visual characteristic of alligator leather is its gradient square grain pattern. Furthermore, due to its tough texture, its durability is widely recognised. Alligator skins are measured in square centimetres. The renowned strap brand Camille Fournet uses only 9-month-old alligators in manufacturing its products, taking the square-scaled skin from the head, belly, and tail. Each alligator can only yield 5 strap(s), and sales experience shows that Chinese women prefer brightly coloured, glossy products.

  2. Python Leather

Python leather features a very fine grain pattern, typically bright and luxurious colours, and a lightweight, thin texture. Aside from leather goods production, one of its major uses is in the making of ethnic musical instruments, such as the erhu and hand drums.

  3. Lizard Leather

Lizard leather has a granular surface, good flexibility, and a soft tactile feel. Lizard leather straps are relatively niche, making them suitable for pairing with delicate ladies' watches.

  4. Shagreen (Stingray Leather)

The stingray, also known as the devil fish, is a tropical fish whose skin features a very unique pattern resembling tiny pearls, thus possessing high aesthetic value and being crafted into various leather goods. After stingray leather undergoes a bleaching and sanding process, each bead on the surface shines like a gem. Because the whitening process is extremely complex, it is relatively expensive.

  5. Ostrich Leather

Ostrich leather features natural polka-dot pattern pores, making it highly distinctive in appearance and difficult to replicate artificially. This animal skin is soft in texture, offers good breathability, and has a tensile strength 3 to 5 times that of cowhide. It contains a natural oil that protects it, ensuring that even when used in cold weather, it will not harden or crack like some leathers, but rather becomes glossier over time. These characteristics make ostrich leather a premium material for luxury leather goods, symbolising status and wealth.

  6. Calfskin

Calfskin is the highest grade among bovine leathers due to its small, clear pore grain. So-called calfskin comes from young cattle, with each hide measuring no more than 15 square feet (equivalent to the size of a car bonnet, where each square foot equals 144 square inches and each foot equals 30.48CM). The leather is soft and smooth. Because of its scarce production, it is mostly used to make smaller leather goods (bags, wallets, etc.). Authentic calfskin shows clear pores on the surface under a magnifying glass, and these pores remain visible when stretched by hand.

In addition to the options introduced above, sharkskin with cartilage is often used on diving watches to convey a maritime feel. Shell cordovan is also used as a watch strap material.

When crafting a watch strap, designing according to the characteristics of different leathers achieves the best results. For example, seamless folded-edge alligator straps suit traditional style watches, whereas calfskin straps with matte black or gloss finishes paired with different coloured stitching work better on sports watches.
