What should you pay attention to when servicing a Swiss watch?
Regularly servicing your luxury watch not only restores its appearance but also ensures more precise timekeeping and helps maintain its value. Timely maintenance can prevent extra costs in the future.
Precautions for Swiss watch maintenance
1. To prevent the waterproof rubber gasket from expanding and contracting due to temperature changes, which creates gaps and accelerates ageing, do not wear Swiss watches (including water-resistant ones) in hot baths, saunas, environments with high steam, or areas with severe temperature and humidity fluctuations.
2. Do not operate the buttons or adjust the crown of a Swiss watch while it is in water. During normal use, non-screw-down crowns should be pushed back to their original position, and screw-down crowns must be tightened to prevent water ingress.
3. Please clean the strap, bracelet and case regularly. It is recommended to have this serviced at a professional Swiss watch cleaning and repair centre. Even for Swiss watches with high water resistance, they must not be left in water for long periods or cleaned by soaking.
4. If the strap material is porous, avoid contact with water, moisture, cosmetics and other chemical-containing substances. Also, avoid exposure to direct sunlight to prevent fading and deformation. Leather straps are consumable items and must be replaced regularly if worn frequently.
5. Swiss watches must not be subjected to severe impacts or drops. Do not allow the Swiss watch to forcefully contact surfaces of equal or higher hardness, such as oxidised metals, quartz crystals, grindstones, sandpaper, granite surfaces or concrete walls. Develop a habit of placing the Swiss watch in a safe place when it is taken off.
6. Do not place Swiss watches near electrical appliances that generate magnetic fields (such as speakers, refrigerators, computers, etc.) or magnetic objects (such as magnets, mobile phones). In addition, magnetic clasps on bags may also magnetise Swiss watches, causing inaccurate timekeeping or temporary stoppage.
7. Do not adjust the date of a Swiss watch between 22 o'clock and 2 o'clock to avoid damage and inaccurate calendar jumps. If you need to adjust the time on a Swiss watch, please turn the crown clockwise; do not turn it anti-clockwise.
8. Under no circumstances should you disassemble a Swiss watch yourself. If any non-authorised repair centre disassembles the Swiss watch, the warranty for that Swiss watch will be voided.
Tips for adjusting time and maintenance
1. Please use and adjust the watch correctly. Before using an automatic mechanical watch for the first time, it must be wound manually, but remember not to overwind it so as to avoid damaging the movement and jamming the mechanism. Take care to gently pull and push the crown when adjusting, without using excessive force. Once adjusted, ensure the crown is pushed fully back in to prevent water resistance failure caused by an unsealed crown!
2. All mechanical watches have a bedding-in period. During this period, a daily rate variation of plus or minus one minute within 24 hours is considered normal. Once the bedding-in period has passed and the watch enters a stable phase, a secondary adjustment can be made! The bedding-in period is generally set at three months!
3. For multi-functional models, take care not to press the chronograph pushers arbitrarily, and remember not to press them in rapid succession! The chronograph function should not be used when the mainspring is fully wound. The sapphire crystal must not rub against diamonds or other glass surfaces!
4. Time-setting method for calendar watches:
A. First, pull the crown out to the time-setting position and rotate it clockwise until the date changes; this indicates it is 24 AM. If adjusting before 12 PM, rotate the hour and minute hands clockwise to the desired time; if adjusting after 12 PM, rotate the hour and minute hands anti-clockwise to the desired time.
B. Use the quick-set corrector button to adjust the date and day display to the required date and day of the week.
C. The day wheel changeover is permitted to complete within 4 hours after the date changes.
D. For single-calendar watches, do not use the quick-set corrector button between 11 pm and 1 am every night. For day-date watches, do not use the quick-set corrector button between 11 pm and 5 am every night.
