  German watch servicing costs

According to the prices currently provided by major watch repair centres in China, a standard service for a German watch generally costs around 300 yuan. Furthermore, if a German watch is broken and requires repair, charges vary depending on the condition: dealing with water or dust ingress costs around 500, demagnetisation is about 700, and repairing deformed or damaged internal components costs 900 upwards. This price is still slightly steep for working-class owners. Therefore, to prevent your cherished timepiece from "falling ill" and ending up on the repair "operating table", you should maintain it well in daily life. Preventing it from "falling ill" avoids expensive "surgery fees".

  German watch maintenance methods

  a. Regularly use a soft cloth or silk to gently wipe away dirt and sweat stains from the case.

  b. Manual-winding mechanical watches should be wound at a fixed time, preferably fully wound in one go. When winding, turn the crown at an appropriate speed and do not wind it too tightly. If it is too tight, the mainspring can easily become stuck by the oil in the barrel. When the mainspring relaxes, it can easily break due to excessive tension.

  c. Watches are most sensitive to violent vibrations; it is best to remove the watch when playing ball sports or hitting things with your hands.

  d. Watches are also susceptible to water damage. Therefore, it is best to remove your watch when washing clothes, washing hands, or doing other work that involves contact with water. If condensation or water droplets appear under the watch crystal, it should be serviced promptly to wipe away the moisture and dry the movement. However, if there is only a small amount of condensation, it will disappear on its own once the weather dries up.

  e. Please do not bring the watch close to magnetic objects such as radios and televisions, so as not to affect accuracy.

  f. Please do not allow the watch to come into contact with solvents, mercury, cosmetic sprays, detergents, adhesives, paints, or camphor, otherwise the case and strap/bracelet may discolour, deteriorate, or be damaged. Camphor is a highly volatile substance that can easily cause the movement oil to solidify, losing its lubricating effect and thereby damaging the accuracy of the timepiece.

  g. Do not expose the watch to sudden changes in temperature. Extreme temperature fluctuations will increase timing errors; the mainspring inside a mechanical watch can easily snap due to rapid temperature changes, and rubber gaskets will age prematurely, compromising the watch's water resistance.

  h. Do not open the case back casually to prevent dust from entering; furthermore, do not adjust settings haphazardly—if damaged, take it to a watch store for repair promptly.

  i. When a mechanical watch is not in use, it is best to wind it once a month to prevent the oil inside from congealing.

  j. Water-resistant, shock-resistant, and anti-magnetic watches only offer preventive protection. During use, you must still avoid contact with water, magnetic fields, and strong vibrations so as not to damage the movement and affect its lifespan.

  Precautions for German watch maintenance

  1. Do not use the watch in hot baths, saunas, or environments with significant temperature fluctuations (including water-resistant watches).

  2. Do not operate the watch buttons or adjust the crown while underwater.

  3. Please clean the bracelet and case regularly; for leather straps, avoid contact with water, moisture, and cosmetics, and keep them out of direct sunlight.

  4. Please keep the watch away from magnetic fields; avoid prolonged proximity to electrical appliances, mobile phones, and magnets.

  5. Do not disassemble the watch under any circumstances.

  6. Please avoid subjecting the watch to impacts or drops.
