There is an overwhelming variety of German watches on the market today, making it difficult to distinguish between genuine and replica pieces. Knowing how to verify the authenticity of a German watch when purchasing has become a crucial matter. Let us take a look at some knowledge on how to spot a fake German watch!

怎么挑选正品德国手表?

German watch authenticity test one: The crown

Generally speaking, the crown is where fake watches are most likely to give themselves away. Fake watches tend to use a uniform manufacturing process, resulting in uneven polished and plated areas—whether chromium or gold plating—with noticeable variations in depth and patches of exposed base metal visible upon close inspection. If the case is made well enough that it is not easily detected, you can inspect the crown section closely. Furthermore, the crowns of many prestigious watches adhere to specific dimensions, whereas fake watches are almost all identical; this is easily spotted by looking at genuine watches frequently.

German watch authenticity test two: The crystal

Luxury watches generally use sapphire crystal; with technological advancements, counterfeit watches have also begun to follow suit.

Counterfeit watches using sapphire crystal are usually easy to spot because, to cut costs, replica makers do not apply anti-reflective coatings to the crystal, let alone double anti-reflective coatings. As a result, they reflect light heavily. Although water droplets will bead up without dispersing, illuminating it under a UV light reveals severe glare; authentic watches show little reflection under bright light due to the anti-reflective coating, displaying a purple or blue sheen.

German watch authenticity test three: The watch brand logo

The brand logo is usually the easiest part of a replica watch to give it away, especially the logo on the dial. You can inspect its workmanship closely using a 4x loupe. On a genuine watch, the metal logo generally appears bright and as good as new, whereas a replica logo often has rough edges and some irregularities. If it is a painted logo, the edges on a genuine watch are smooth without burrs, while the edges on a replica show slight signs of bleeding, and the lettering varies in depth, which can be seen more clearly with a 8x loupe.

German watch authenticity test four: Case back

The casebacks of replica watches are not produced according to luxury watch specifications; some (such as OMEGA, AP, etc.) convert original screw-down casebacks into snap-on ones, which interested collectors may wish to check themselves. Some watches feature octagonal casebacks or back covers secured by several screws; to cut costs, counterfeiters create incongruous snap-on casebacks shaped like screw-down covers.

German watch authenticity test five: Weight

To ensure a high degree of simulation, modern replica watches often use a lead ring inside to match the weight of a genuine watch. However, you can test the weight of other parts, such as the bracelet, which will feel comparatively much lighter. At the same time, replica watches generally tend to be light overall, and even with the use of a lead ring for ballast, the feel in the hand remains unusual.

German watch authenticity test six: Serial number

Luxury watch manufacturers all have their own established numbering rules and individual serial numbers. Based on these numbers, you can look up the specification, model, production date, and place of sale of the watch. In contrast, replica watches typically use a single duplicated number or lack one altogether, making them easy to distinguish. Furthermore, the serial numbers on genuine watches appear in various locations on the watch, whereas on replicas they only ever appear on the case back.

German watch authenticity test seven: Movement

Simply hold the watch to your ear and listen; replicas almost always produce a slower ticking sound. Most genuine watches operate at a frequency of 28800 or higher, though many genuine watches also feature slow beats, so this serves as just one indicator.

Precautions for using a German watch

1, avoid bringing the watch close to magnetic clasps

Regardless of the model or high value, Noob factory watches are vulnerable to magnetic fields. For mechanical watches, the movement is the most susceptible to magnetic interference; while quartz watches do not have as many steel components, they are still significantly affected. Regarding this issue, men in particular should note not to place their watches near belt buckles, while women should keep their watches away from magnetic clasps on handbags.

2, wearing the watch while bathing or swimming

Although some replica watches from the N-factory can be worn while diving, they are in the minority. Standard watches can be worn while washing, but they cannot withstand prolonged immersion. Therefore, please do not wear your watch while swimming or bathing, and certainly do not take it into a sauna; the high temperatures will cause the watch to oxidise.

3, never taking it to a professional service centre for maintenance.

Watches are items subject to wear and tear. To ensure a longer lifespan, they must be taken to after-sales service for professional maintenance and servicing. As for how often maintenance is required, please consult the after-sales staff.
