How to replace a watch strap?
How to change a watch strap? Sometimes a watch strap does not fit the wearer's wrist very well, or the watch strap gets damaged, requiring a replacement. So, how should you correctly replace a watch strap?
Method for correctly replacing a watch strap
1, metal bracelets. When the watch is laid flat, the letters or logos on the deployment clasp should align with the dial. If they are upside down, the bracelet has been installed backwards. You should be able to open the clasp comfortably with your thumb. For a butterfly clasp, you simply need to check whether the logo faces the same direction as the dial. If the bracelet is reversed, opening and closing it will definitely feel awkward.
2, if you do not have tools, everyday items like a small screwdriver or a toothpick can actually serve as substitutes. As a brief piece of background info, the rod-like component fitted inside here is called a spring bar, which is the pin housed inside leather straps. Both ends feature springs to make installation easier.
3, next, remove the old strap. Use the notched end of the tool to catch the small protrusion on one end of the spring bar, then press downwards to compress the spring and shorten the spring bar so that you can detach it.
4, you can then fit the new strap. First, clear the strap channel (the new one is now installed).
5, fit the spring bar, depress one side of the spring bar, guide it into the lug hole on the watch, and the job is done.
When purchasing a strap, you must measure the exact width of the original strap. Note that straps with straight ends are generally easier to replace; if they feature a notched or non-standard shape, you may need a custom piece or a modification.
Cleaning and maintenance methods for leather watch straps
First, we need to understand the material of the leather strap. Leather straps are generally crafted from alligator, lizard, ostrich, shark, and calfskin, among others. Regardless of the material, wearing one for an extended period will produce an odour. Cleaning it scientifically and keeping the strap dry helps to extend its lifespan. As a side note from the editor: high-quality straps are typically stitched along the edges with thread, whereas lower-grade straps are bonded with glue. Glued straps easily delaminate when exposed to water, and there is no good remedy for delaminated straps, making timely replacement the best option.
If the strap gets wet, dry it immediately with a soft cloth or tissue. Dust on the strap can be wiped away with a damp cloth and then gently dried. When cleaning, you should use a soft brush dipped in a little soapy water and scrub quickly. To prevent soapy water from soaking into the leather, the entire process is best completed within 20 seconds.
Although humid environments are damaging to leather straps, do not be tempted to place the strap in direct sunlight to dry it quickly after cleaning. Prolonged exposure to the sun will also cause the strap to degrade.
People commonly polish their leather shoes with shoe polish, and the same applies to leather watch straps. Leather conditioner provides excellent protection for straps; applying some leather conditioner to the strap can make maintenance even more effective.
