How do I adjust the date on an automatic mechanical watch?
How do I adjust the date function on an automatic mechanical watch? Below, I will share some knowledge on adjusting automatic mechanical watches.
Methods for adjusting the date function on an automatic mechanical watch
The date function is perhaps the simplest complication on an automatic mechanical watch, and it comes in many types. The most common is the window-style date. Window dates also have various forms; for example, there are three types based on the speed at which the date digits change:
(1) Instantaneous jump, (2) quick jump, (3) slow crawl.
The date window is most commonly located at the 3 o'clock position on the dial, though other positions exist. A more unique variation is the so-called "Big Date," where the tens and units digits are displayed on two separate discs. This allows the digits to be made larger without needing a magnifying lens on the watch crystal. The date mechanism in an automatic mechanical watch is not structurally complex; the main components include the date disc, date driving wheel, date intermediate wheel, date jumper, date jumper spring, date quick-set wheel, and the date cover plate with screws.
Working principle: Power is transmitted from the hour wheel, and through the gearing of the date intermediate wheel, the date driving wheel rotates once every 24 hours. The date driving wheel has a finger (or a spring-like component) used to advance the teeth of the date disc. The date disc has 31 teeth and characters, and the date jumper engages with the teeth of the date disc, providing positioning under the pressure of the date jumper spring. If the date change is a slow crawl or quick jump, the date driving wheel and date disc move slowly during the transition (starting from 8 o'clock at night and finishing at 12 o'clock). If the date change is instantaneous, there is an additional cam under the date driving wheel along with a large lever and spring; when the cam is compressed by the lever and suddenly released, it snaps the date disc forward by one tooth (digit) in an instant.
Most watches also feature a quick-set date function, allowing the date numerals to be adjusted rapidly. This is generally done by pulling the crown out to the first click. At this point, the setting wheel, which meshes with the intermediate wheel, disengages from its previous direction and engages with the quick-set date wheel. The quick-set date wheel is a rocking gear, meaning its pivot hole is elongated; therefore, only when the crown is turned in a certain direction does it move closer to, and mesh with, the teeth of the date disc to turn it, driven by the tangential force at the gear engagement point. Quick-set date wheels typically have very few teeth, around 3-5. Please avoid adjusting the date between 8 in the evening and 12, during which time the date change cycle takes place.
Common questions regarding mechanical watch maintenance
a. Regularly use a soft cloth or silk to gently wipe away dirt and sweat stains from the case.
b. Manual-winding mechanical watches should be wound at a fixed time, preferably fully wound in one go. When winding, turn the crown at an appropriate speed and do not wind it too tightly. If it is too tight, the mainspring can easily become stuck by the oil in the barrel. When the mainspring relaxes, it can easily break due to excessive tension.
c. Watches are most sensitive to violent vibrations; it is best to remove the watch when playing ball sports or hitting things with your hands.
d. Watches are also susceptible to water damage. Therefore, it is best to remove your watch when washing clothes, washing hands, or doing other work that involves contact with water. If condensation or water droplets appear under the watch crystal, it should be serviced promptly to wipe away the moisture and dry the movement. However, if there is only a small amount of condensation, it will disappear on its own once the weather dries up.
e. Please do not bring the watch close to magnetic objects such as radios and televisions, so as not to affect accuracy.
