Mechanical watches are most vulnerable to magnetism, and once magnetised, it can have a serious impact on us. Not only that, but demagnetising a watch is also a troublesome process. Below, I will share some tips on how to demagnetise mechanical watches.

  Tips for demagnetising mechanical watches

Demagnetisation method one: Send the watch to a professional repair shop for demagnetisation. Magnetisation is a relatively common phenomenon nowadays, and the solution is not difficult. You only need to go to an authorised service centre to demagnetise it using specialised equipment. It takes just a mere 30 seconds, and the watch can be demagnetised without affecting its performance.

Demagnetisation method two: If you are far away from a watch repair shop, you can also demagnetise it yourself. The specific method is: Find an unmagnetised iron block with a hollow circular centre, stand it upright on a table, and the magnetism on the watch can be "absorbed" by the iron block, restoring the watch to normal. Alternatively, use a magnetised iron tin with both ends open, and pass your cherished watch back and forth through the iron tin for 5–6 minutes to complete the demagnetisation.

How to prevent a watch from becoming magnetised?

Once a watch becomes magnetised, it will suddenly run very fast, even gaining 1-2 hours per day. When wearing a mechanical watch daily, pay attention to keeping it away from magnetic fields, such as electrical appliances like speakers, televisions and mobile phones.

How to determine whether a mechanical watch is magnetised

There is no need to panic if your cherished watch is magnetised. First, place a compass near the watch to see if the compass needle has any faint fluctuation. If it does, it is magnetised; otherwise, it is not.
