百达翡丽真假鉴别方法

Methods for identifying genuine Patek Philippe watches WIDTH

First, look at the movement. Among Patek Philippe's currently produced mechanical watches, whether for women or men, automatic or manual, over 95% feature an exhibition case back. The main mechanical movements currently used by Patek Philippe include 215, 315, 324, 240, 16-250, 25-21, 27-525, 28-20, 28-520, and 29-535 (some of which are discontinued). You can verify whether the watch houses one of these movements through the transparent case back (using a magnifying glass to clearly see the movement calibre and serial number engraved on the movement). Of course, this assumes you have a good understanding of what these movements look like; otherwise, even with an exhibition back, it is difficult to identify the movement. This requires viewing many examples and accumulating considerable experience to distinguish them correctly. Patek Philippe quartz watches are produced exclusively for women and feature solid case backs, making them harder to authenticate than mechanical watches. However, Patek Philippe's manufacturing craftsmanship is simply unmatched by replicas or counterfeit watches, so they can also be authenticated by their exterior craftsmanship, such as the finishing of metal bracelets and the polishing of the case.

Second, looking at the exterior of the watch, almost all Patek Philippe watches have virtually no brand markings or model numbers on the case back. Apart from a small number of limited-edition watches with engraving on the back, more than 99% of the remaining models do not have any text or logo. Furthermore, Patek Philippe has always been known for its understated approach, so the brand logo is rarely seen on the dial. Among currently produced models, only 5180/1G, 4937, and 7180 display the brand logo on the front.

Third, since starting to produce tourbillon watches, Patek Philippe has never exposed the tourbillon mechanism on the dial. This is firstly due to the brand's understated ethos, and secondly for the functional benefit of the tourbillon mechanism. As we know, the tourbillon mechanism was invented by the master horologist Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1795. In simple terms, it is a regulating device invented to counteract the effects of gravity on a watch's accuracy. Patek Philippe's tourbillon is extremely precise, handcrafted from 72 tiny components with a total weight of no more than 0.2 grams, making it lighter than a velvet feather. Leaving a tourbillon exposed has certain drawbacks. First, the tourbillon is a precision instrument containing internal lubricants; if left exposed and regularly subjected to sunlight, the lubricants will evaporate too quickly, affecting timekeeping accuracy and defeating the original purpose of a tourbillon. If you find a watch with an exposed tourbillon, you can be a hundred per cent certain it is not a Patek Philippe watch.

Fourth, some replica watches imitate famous Patek Philippe models, such as 5970, which features a 30-minute chronograph and a perpetual calendar function, where small windows near the 12 o'clock position display the day and month respectively. Some replica makers mistakenly change the day window into a year window, frequently displaying 2012. From the Patek Philippe watches I have seen, the only one capable of displaying the year is the Caliber 89, the most complex portable timepiece in the world created at the time to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Patek Philippe's founding. This shows that these counterfeiters know nothing about Patek Philippe.

Fifth, early Patek Philippe models almost all featured solid case backs, which presents certain authentication challenges, but you can refer to the second point above. Even vintage Patek Philippe watches will not have any text, brand logos, or case numbers on the back. If necessary, older watches can be sent to an authorised Patek Philippe customer service centre, where a technician can open the case back to reveal the model and case number on the inner side.

Sixth, the watch certificate. Every Patek Philippe watch comes with a corresponding certificate, also known as a guarantee card. The certificate is printed with the watch reference number, movement number, case number, and movement calibre. All three sets of numbers can be found on the watch itself: the reference number is engraved on the inside of the case back and requires a professional Patek Philippe technician to open the case back to view; the movement number is engraved on the movement bridge and can be seen directly if the watch has an exhibition case back; the case number is similarly located on the inner side of the case back, and the movement calibre can be found on the movement bridge. When purchasing a Patek Philippe, the owner signs it on the spot and writes the date of purchase for the watch certificate to officially come into effect. If there is no certificate at the time of purchase, you can be a hundred per cent certain it is a replica watch.
