What does crown mean?
The crown, commonly known as the winding crown, is most frequently found on the outer right side of the case at the three o'clock position. The word crown is translated directly from its English meaning. Crowns are used to adjust the date and time and to wind the watch, and they are made of steel, titanium, ceramic, or gold.
Crown shapes: spherical, octagonal, cogwheel, onion crown, hip-hop style small crown, screw-down crown, and folding crown.
Gemstones set into the crown: diamond, sapphire, ruby, emerald, jadeite, and spinel.
Push-in crown
Pull straight out to adjust the time. For watches with a calendar function, the first click generally adjusts the date, and the second click adjusts the time.
Screw-down
The screw-down crown, also known as a threaded crown: the crown locks via a screw thread. Rotating the crown anti-clockwise unlocks it for normal operation. Screw-down crowns effectively enhance a watch's water resistance; make sure to lock the crown securely after use.
Crown guard
A device designed on the exterior of the crown to protect it from damage, resembling an arched bridge in appearance.
