Do platinum watches fade?

News centrePublished

Platinum is a naturally occurring white precious metal. Only platinum can truly be called white gold, and platinum purity typically reaches 95%. Platinum is thirty times rarer than gold and is mined in only a very small number of places across the globe.

Pure platinum is a brilliant white with a metallic lustre. Its colour and sheen are entirely natural and enduring, with a hardness of 4 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale. It has high ductility, allowing it to be drawn into very fine platinum wire or rolled into extremely thin platinum foil. Its strength and toughness are also much higher than those of other precious metals. Platinum is generally classified as pure platinum, iridium-platinum, and white gold (K-gold). National regulations stipulate that only jewellery with a platinum content of 85% or higher may be called platinum jewellery and must bear the Pt hallmark.

Platinum has extremely stable properties, meaning it will not tarnish or fade from daily wear, and its lustre remains as good as new. Even when in contact with common household acidic substances—such as sulphur in hot springs, bleach, chlorine in swimming pools, or sweat—it remains unaffected, allowing you to wear platinum jewellery with complete peace of mind at any time.

  Classification of platinum

  1. Pure platinum

The highest grade of platinum, featuring a pure white colour that does not fade, commonly used for crafting engagement rings and setting diamonds.

  2. Iridium-platinum

Refers to an alloy composed of iridium and platinum. It also features a silver-white colour, a strong metallic lustre, relatively high hardness, a higher relative density, and chemical stability.

  3.K White Gold

Because platinum has a relatively high hardness, other metals must be blended into it to form an alloy when making jewellery in order to appropriately reduce its hardness. Other metals are also often blended in to reduce the production cost of platinum accessories. Consequently, white gold has appeared on the jewellery market.
