　　When using a mechanical watch, the balance staff length is calculated by subtracting the length of the intermediate wheel. The balance staff of a mechanical watch is relatively thin; when it is not easy to file it round directly, the exposed steel wire can be filed into facets in the order of a regular quadrilateral and regular octagon, and finally the facets are filed away to form a circle.

　　After the front end of the balance staff is inserted into the mainplate hole, it should not protrude excessively (relative to the mainplate through-hole), to avoid it rubbing against parts such as the centre wheel or barrel bridge. When the stem is pulled out to the hand-setting position, the minute wheel should still remain partly within the mainplate hole; otherwise, the stem will not only wobble but also disrupt the fit of other matching components. The diameter of the balance staff should be slightly smaller than that of the small circular wheel on the mainplate, ideally allowing the balance staff to rotate freely in its hole without wobbling.
