Water resistance of replica waterproof watches and influencing factors
Why do many replica watches still let water in even though their case backs state a water resistance rating? In truth, are water-resistant watches actually not waterproof? They certainly are water-resistant, just not quite as invincible as people might think.
Generally, water-resistant watches have a water resistance rating of at least 30 metres, where being water-resistant to 30 metres means it can withstand the water pressure at a depth of 30 metres. A 30-metre water resistance rating is also known as splash-proofing, which only protects against accidental external splashes or spills. A 50-metre water resistance offers enhanced resistance, but the watch still should not be submerged in water, though it can be worn while doing everyday household chores. A 100-metre water resistance means it can go into the water, but only for shallow swimming; deep diving is still out of the question.
Furthermore, for an everyday watch, several minor details in daily life also affect its water resistance.
1. Environments with large temperature differences also easily cause water to enter the timepiece
Generally speaking, water-resistant watches achieve water-resistance through the use of waterproof rubber gaskets and waterproof paste. However, high temperatures will accelerate the ageing of waterproof gaskets and waterproof paste.
When the temperature rises, the waterproof gasket expands and the waterproof paste becomes thinner. When the temperature drops, the waterproof gasket contracts and the waterproof paste becomes more viscous. Back and forth, this may create small gaps allowing moisture to take advantage and enter. This situation becomes particularly common in winter. In northern areas with central heating, the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors increases, making it very easy for condensation to appear in the timepiece.
2. Corrosive environments will also cause water to enter the timepiece
Corrosive liquids can cause the water-resistant gaskets to harden, reducing their effectiveness. Daily careless actions can pose a risk of water ingress for a watch. For example, not cleaning the watch promptly after a sweaty run, wearing a daily water-resistant watch while swimming or paddling at the beach and getting it wet without a second thought, or habitually spraying perfume on the wrist where the watch is worn... all these can lead to water entering the watch.
So how can you prevent water from getting into a replica watch? If there is only slight condensation, you can try the following:
1. Wear the watch backwards on your wrist with the watch glass facing inwards and the case back facing outwards, and leave it for two hours.
2. Wrap the watch tightly in several layers of toilet paper or a moisture-absorbing flannel cloth, place it near a 40-watt incandescent light bulb at a distance of about 15 centimetres, and warm it for roughly 30 minutes.
3. Place the watch together with silica gel desiccant beads inside a sealed container for a few hours.
If condensation occurs repeatedly, your replica watch will need a health check. This is because recurring misting often indicates that the watch's water resistance is diminishing; water resistance is not permanent, and perished seals or accidental knocks can compromise a watch's ability to keep water out. To prevent water ingress, a watch should typically be inspected by a professional service centre every 1-2 years.
