Understanding magnetism issues in replica watches
The biggest concern for mechanical watch users is magnetism, as it not only affects timekeeping but can also cause significant damage to the watch. To avoid such situations, how can one protect a replica watch from magnetism? Let us explore this together.
I. Understanding the basics of anti-magnetism
1. Anti-magnetic specifications for watches. Japanese watches are typically categorised as having no anti-magnetic rating, standard anti-magnetic, or reinforced anti-magnetic. No rating: can resist a magnetic field of 1600A/m. Standard anti-magnetic: can resist a magnetic field of 4800A/m. Reinforced anti-magnetic: can resist a magnetic field of 16000A/m.
2. Magnetic field attenuation with distance. Magnetic field strength is inversely proportional to the 2 power of the distance; as distance increases, the magnetic field strength drops sharply. Magnetic field strengths for common items when in contact versus at a distance of 5cm: mobile phone speaker ~22400~1600; telephone handset ~12000~400; portable radio speaker ~16000~400.
Additionally, items like refrigerator doors and electric shavers should also be kept at a certain distance. It is clear that for a standard anti-magnetic watch, keeping it at a distance of 5cm or more from the aforementioned magnetic objects is safe. Even for watches without an anti-magnetic rating, simply keeping them a little further away is sufficient. In daily life, a little caution is all that is required.
II. Simple methods to diagnose a magnetised watch
Purchase a compass and bring the watch close to it. If the compass needle deflects significantly, the watch is magnetised. Even if the watch is not magnetised, because it is made of steel, the compass needle will still move slightly when brought close, though the degree of deflection will be very small.
This method can also be used to detect whether a magnetic field exists where you store your watch. Take the compass to the storage location; if the needle deflects, there is a suspicious magnetic object nearby. Household steel tools, such as pliers, often unknowingly come close to magnetic items and become magnetised, so such tools should be kept away from where watches are stored.
III. Demagnetisation at a repair shop
1. If the watch has become magnetised, it is recommended to take it directly to a professional watch repair shop for demagnetisation.
2. Find a non-magnetised iron block with a hollow centre, stand it upright on a table, and bring the watch close to the block; the magnetism in the watch can be 'absorbed' by the iron block, allowing the watch to return to normal. Alternatively, use a hollow iron container open at both ends; place the magnetised watch inside and move it back and forth for 5-6 minutes to demagnetise it.
