What is the difference between one-to-one watches and high-imitation watches?
Introduction: Many people are fascinated by replica watches, and the various concepts online can be overwhelming. Buying a replica watch that you are truly happy with can feel like a shot in the dark. Therefore, I have written this brief guide in the hope of clearing up some doubts and giving everyone a proper understanding of replica watches.
1. Regarding the quality of replica watches
Replica watches can range from very cheap market stall items costing two or three hundred, to expensive ones priced at five or six thousand or even upwards of ten thousand. The craftsmanship and quality naturally vary, and we will not be discussing street market items here.
Top-tier replica developed one-to-one using genuine models as reference
These types of watches are developed by using genuine pieces to create moulds, typically selecting popular models based on market demand and mainstream aesthetic standards. In some cases, as soon as a new genuine model is released before it even hits boutiques, a replica version is already produced. Sometimes, foreign genuine models go on sale first, allowing someone to acquire the watch and create a mould. In other instances, new genuine models only differ in minor details from older ones, so slightly modifying an existing model allows them to create the new version.
Top-tier replica watches will always choose the most stable and reliable movement while ensuring the functions match the genuine article. For instance, for a manual-winding Panerai 111, they would choose a Seagull 6497 movement. For an automatic winding Panerai with a date function, they would choose 7750. Some people say that 7750 is a chronograph movement, so why not choose movements like 2824 or 2836 for a Panerai 386 style that does not require chronograph functions? Anyone who collects watches knows that the more complex the function, the higher the probability of failure. Movements like 2824 and 2836 are simpler and more stable than 7750. However, for the structure of an automatic watch like the Panerai 386, featuring a seconds sub-dial at the 9 o'clock position and a date display, only the 7750 movement can achieve this. Therefore, there is no need to dwell on why factories choose specific movements for these watches; the chosen movements are always selected to achieve maximum fidelity and functionality.
Customised watches
Customised watches are somewhat more expensive. These feature cases wrapped in real gold, or even cases made from solid gold, and can be set with genuine diamonds. However, the movement functions do not differ significantly from top-tier replica watches, making them suitable for enthusiasts who pursue the ultimate in individuality.
2. Factories producing replica watches
Regarding the N factory, ZF factory, KW factory, HBB V6 factory, and JF factory currently talked about online, I would like to explain the production process of replica watches.
1, how replica watches are made
We are referring here to top-tier replica watches. For instance, if the JF factory wants to make an Audemars Piguet 15703, they will definitely use a genuine watch to create moulds. The JF factory will buy a genuine Audemars Piguet 15703, which might not be brand new and could be pre-owned. Of course, such prominent manufacturers earn enough to make buying a brand-new genuine piece quite effortless. They will then disassemble the watch to replicate each component: the case, bracelet, clasp, and crown. These are subsequently handed over to various manufacturing plants. Some friends might ask whether the JF factory is a single entity and why parts are sent to different factories. It is important to point out that producing a single watch requires different subcontractors to make various parts, firstly for specialisation, and secondly to mitigate risk. The N factory and ZF factory that we often mention do not manufacture parts themselves; they simply distribute the component production to subcontractors, procure the movements, and hire watchmakers to assemble the final timepiece.
Generally, they do not assemble all accessories into complete watches immediately; they usually assemble only a portion and wait for orders before completing the rest. This is done firstly because assembling everything into complete watches carries a higher risk of being inspected by industry and commerce authorities, and secondly because some parts are interchangeable, allowing for maximum utilisation based on sales performance. For example, with Panerai pam111 and pam005, fitting a sandwich dial and an exhibition caseback yields 111, whereas fitting a standard dial and a solid caseback yields 005. If 111 sells in higher quantities, the remaining stock at most will simply be some 005 dials and casebacks, which helps cut costs. You can also buy a genuine watch to take apart, find factories to copy the case and bracelet, purchase a movement, assemble it yourself, and release it onto the market, effectively making you a factory as well. Developing a watch generally requires a minimum batch of 500 pieces, as tooling and manufacturing case components must be done in bulk.
Why do products from those large factories turn out better? A watch model launched by a newcomer might not sell well because the skill levels of the subcontractor manufacturing the various parts also vary. In a precision item like a watch, even the slightest mismatch in a single component means it cannot be assembled. Therefore, smooth cooperation among various subcontractors is essential to produce a flawless watch. Some smaller factories find that the accessories they produce are difficult to assemble, so during mass production, they compromise on accuracy to adjust component dimensions. Major players like the N factory V6 have been in business longer, possess rich experience, enjoy more mature cooperation with subcontractors, and have a firmer grasp of details. Consequently, the watches produced by these large manufacturers are far more refined in terms of fidelity and quality.
2, how replica watches reach customers
Websites claiming to be the official sites of factory X appear online, but anyone with a bit of knowledge knows that factories do not engage in retail sales, nor would they sell to unfamiliar customers in the market. In the past, many factories had storefronts in the markets, but nowadays, large-scale operations no longer open physical market stalls due to the high risk of regulatory inspections. They only supply goods to familiar intermediaries. It sounds somewhat mysterious, but given the nature of these items, they are strictly sold to regulars, and no amount of money will convince them to sell to strangers. Many friends also ask me if there is a physical store they can visit, especially in Beijing. A physical shop would undoubtedly be professional suicide, though I completely understand the sentiment of customers who want seeing is believing.
3, after-sales service and warranty
If a watch breaks, mechanical and timing issues can be sent back to the factory for free repairs, whereas replacing accessories like clasps and straps incurs material costs. Mechanical items are always prone to breakdowns; no one can guarantee that a sold watch will never have issues. If it breaks, it is sent back to the factory's after-sales service for repair, as they have a dedicated team of technicians. Some customers wear theirs for one or two years without any issues, whilst others experience faults within a month. Such occurrences are completely normal. When buying a replica watch, good fortune (luck) plays a major role, and we hope customers approach this rationally. Some people complain that after spending several thousand on a watch, it stops working within a month and feel cheated. Such customers generally do not understand mechanical watches. Anyone who has owned genuine pieces knows that even genuine watches costing tens of thousands can break, and returning them to an official service centre might mean waiting two to three months to get them back. Currently, replica watch repairs generally take about two weeks, though some factories are quicker.
Summary: Regarding the movement issue, in reality, 90% of replica watches do not use Swiss movements. Firstly, the cost is high, and secondly, the stability of domestic replica movements is actually no inferior to Swiss movements. I once met someone who refused to listen to the truth; when I told him this used a domestic movement and that this particular model did not come with a Swiss movement version, he still preferred to spend an extra thousand-odd pounds to buy it from someone else... I imagine the peace of mind was what he really bought with that extra money.
