Why did Omega change the Constellation into the Globemaster?
In 2015,Omegaa new name, 'Globemaster', appeared in the lineup. Among modern Omega watches, Omega has four heavenly kings: Constellation, Seamaster, Speedmaster, and De Ville, with all watches named after these four collections. Where did this new Omega watch named 'Globemaster' actually come from? Why did Omega change the Constellation into the Globemaster? Next, let me explain to everyone the reason why Omega turned the Constellation into the Globemaster.
The Origins of the Globemaster
Omega refers to this watch as the Constellation Globemaster. Although the word 'Constellation' does not appear on the dial, the connection between the Globemaster and the Constellation is clearly visible through the small star at the 6 o'clock position and the iconic 'pie-pan' dial found on vintage Constellation models. In reality, the Globemaster is a Constellation. When the Omega Constellation entered the US market in the 50s, it encountered a problem: the name 'Constellation' was already in use. Lockheed Martin had already used the name for the famous military and civil transport aircraft from the Second World War. Negotiations between Omega and Lockheed Martin resulted in Omega being unable to use the name. Consequently, Omega was forced to rename the Constellation to 'Globemaster'—the current name—to enter the US market. Such issues are actually quite common; for example, the game Resident Evil has two names. In Asia, it is called Biohazard, but when it entered the US, there was already an American band called Biohazard. Due to copyright issues that could not be resolved, it was renamed Resident Evil in Western markets. Omega changed the 'Constellation' text at the 6 o'clock position on the dial to 'Globemaster', featuring only the word 'Globemaster' without the star. Compared to standard vintage Omega Constellation models, vintage Globemasters are not as common, especially in China. However, when searching internationally, one can find these Omega timepieces.
How the Constellation Became the Globemaster
After the Globemaster was unveiled at Baselworld in 2015, it immediately caused a sensation. This watch, along with the Patek Philippe 5524 of that year, instantly became a hot topic (both due to their aesthetic similarities to other brands). The main controversy surrounding the Omega Globemaster focused on its appearance, specifically the bezel. Many watch enthusiasts felt the Globemaster's bezel was 'not very Omega'. The reason is that the Rolex fluted bezel is so deeply ingrained in the public consciousness that it has become a definitive symbol of Rolex. The Omega Globemaster also uses a fluted bezel, leading many to feel it was 'very Rolex'. However, this is not the case. Now that we clearly understand that the Globemaster and the Constellation are effectively the same watch, we can easily identify the origins of all the iconic features of the Globemaster from vintage Omega Constellation models, proving that the Globemaster is a quintessential Omega.
The Omega Constellation has undergone many modifications throughout its history; the sheer number and variety of these changes are astonishing. From round cases and TV-shaped watches to integrated head-and-bracelet designs, the Constellation has seen it all. In the 60s and 70s, the 'c-shape' case became popular in the watch industry, and Omega subsequently transformed the Constellation into this style. During this period, a version of the Constellation appeared that featured a c-shape case with a fluted bezel. Clearly, the fluted bezel is not a Rolex patent. In fact, the case shape of the Globemaster we see today is primarily inspired by the c-shape fluted-bezel Constellation models of the 60s and 70s, simply modifying the large c-shape case of that era into a smaller version. We can also see that the fluting on the Omega bezel is different from that of a Rolex; the Omega flutes are finer and more densely packed.
Another major iconic feature of the Globemaster is the 'pie-pan' dial. This is the name Chinese watch enthusiasts gave to this polygonal dial, which Omega officially calls the 'pie-pan' (because of its shape). The pie-pan dial was a signature feature of the Constellation in the 60s. At that time, some Constellation models also combined the pie-pan dial with 'arrowhead' indices (a diamond-shaped hour marker) and 'dog-leg' lugs (lugs with an angled profile), creating a classic: the arrowhead-index, pie-pan dial, dog-leg lug Constellation. Omega has transplanted this most classic historical design to the modern Globemaster, using luminous baton indices; the combination of a pie-pan dial and baton indices is also a hallmark of vintage Constellation models. There should be no controversy regarding the Globemaster now; all facts point to one conclusion: the Globemaster is the culmination of Omega's work over the past 60 years, concentrating all the essence of Omega from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and the modern era.
Globemaster, Constellation, and Day-Date
Watches certainly have a hierarchy. First, I want you to understand that the top-tier watch from Omega is the Constellation. Even though the Seamaster and Speedmaster are equally renowned, and many models are priced similarly to the Constellation, just as the Day-Date is the pinnacle of Rolex, the Constellation occupies the highest peak among all Omega watches and is positioned to compete with the Rolex Day-Date. The Constellation you see today is not exactly the same as the Constellation of history. The Constellation once had a series called 'Grand Luxe' with gold heads and gold bracelets, which were very luxurious, whereas what we usually see now are steel cases or two-tone models with gold accents. Since we already have the Constellation, why do we need the Globemaster? Because, like the Ballon Bleu and J12, which are watches for both men and women, the Constellation is not exclusively a men's watch. The emergence of the Globemaster completely solved this problem. The three-hand Globemaster model is 39 mm, and the annual calendar model is 41 mm; there are no small sizes at all, and the entire watch does not carry a hint of femininity. Recently, I often see people selling 35 mm Constellations, and to make them easier to sell, they label the 35 mm Constellation as a men's watch. But in today's trends, how many men would dare to buy a 35 mm watch? Furthermore, do not forget that the Globemaster is derived from the vintage Constellation and is Omega's highest-positioned watch. Between the Constellation and the Globemaster, the Globemaster might be the better choice, while the Constellation can be left for your wife.
Having said that, I would like to recommend a popular Omega watch model; those interested can add me on WeChat for further enquiries.
