Relating the wartime watch tales of Panerai
Past watch stories are largely linked to military affairs; yet without romance and heavy with text, few find them readable. Strong industrial design, convenient operability, and a robust movement indeed endowed watches with their most distinct DNA during wartime, establishing them as signature designs for brands. During the Second World War, the birth of a watch transformed a brand. Back in 1918, Major Rossetti and Lieutenant Paolucci could not have imagined that they would 'develop' a new watch through a campaign that would be passed down to this day. That is,Panerai Luminor collection PAM00590。

Rome was not built in a day, and the progression of the story must trace back to the warfare of 1914. In that era, during night operations, luminescence allowed flight instrument panels to be read clearly in the pitch dark, providing a massive strategic advantage at the time. The luminous paint of the period still relied primarily on radium-based paint as its core material; such a material posed severe health hazards, yet the advantage of luminescence in night combat sparked a boom in producing luminous watches. Due to its unique strategic significance, the US Department of Defense also began adopting watches featuring this material as standard military equipment. Later adopted by Italian naval officers, a chance encounter led them to Florence to visit a watchmaker of the time: Mr Guido Panerai, who developed a watch meeting the operational requirements of the Italian Navy, laying the groundwork for Panerai's signature 'sandwich' dial and the subsequent classic 'Radiomir' watches.

The triumph of war was a favourable factor in the improvement of wristwatches. Years later, the radioactive coating radium was replaced by Luminor, and the distinctive crown bridge enhanced water resistance, giving birth to a new timepiece named the Luminor. The very first Luminor version dates back to 1950. At that time, this diving watch collection measured 47 mm wide, featuring a more rounded case than current 44 mm Luminor creations.

It is said that Panerai was still a niche brand well known in military circles back then, but throughout the past years, it never served civilian applications, relying essentially on precision timing and rigorous manufacturing to be regarded as a tool. Could it stoop to grace men's wrists? Time provided the answer. If remaining unchanged is courting self-destruction, thenPanerai watchfinding a way out, designs that seemed antiquated at the time (extra-large case, 15 mm thickness, oiled elongated leather strap) look avant-garde today. People call them large-calibre watches, and they were sold to the world's most enthusiastic trendsetters, thus becoming synonymous with style.
