  Panerai brand introduction

Panerai was founded in 1860, known for precision mechanics and exceptional quality. It originally made precision instruments and watches for the Royal Italian Navy. Today, Panerai has become a world-renowned luxury sports watch brand. With design inspiration originating from the sea, Panerai positions itself as a high-end watch brand in the sports and leisure fields. Italian design style and Swiss expertise give every watch a distinct brand style and superior quality.

  Panerai brand story

In 1860, Giovanni Panerai (1825-1897), founder of the Panerai family business, established a watch shop in Florence: this watch shop served as both a shop and a workshop, as well as the city's first watchmaking school. Thus began the history of Panerai.

During 1890-1900, Guido Panerai (1873-1934), grandson of Giovanni Panerai, expanded the scope of the family business, devoting himself to the production of precision instruments and becoming an appointed supplier to the Royal Italian Navy.

In 1900, Panerai relocated its watch workshop to the Palazzo Arcivescovile in Piazza San Giovanni, Florence. This workshop remains the location of Panerai's Florence headquarters to this day. The "Orologeria Svizzera" sign on the doorway is still faintly discernible, displaying Panerai's esteemed Swiss heritage.

In 1910, the watchmaker began developing luminescent material for use on instrument dials, sights, and telescope devices, eventually successfully combining zinc sulphide and radioactive bromine to develop Radiomir with luminescent effects. Placing the mixture inside small glass tubes effectively prolonged its lifespan. With this successful invention, Guido Panerai obtained patents in Italy and other countries.

In 1915-1918, during the First World War, the Royal Italian Navy adopted precision instruments produced by Panerai, which included luminescent devices for night-raid gun sights, timing devices, depth gauges, and mechanical calculators to assist high-speed torpedo boats (MAS) in launching torpedoes.

In 1934, Giuseppe and Maria inherited their father Guido Panerai's business. Maria managed the "Orologeria Svizzera" watch workshop, while Giuseppe continued to cooperate with the Royal Italian Navy, providing underwater instruments, flashlights, wrist compasses, and wrist depth gauges. The future creation of the Radiomir and Luminor watch collections is attributed to Giuseppe's efforts.

In 1936, the Royal Italian Navy searched everywhere without finding timing tools that met their requirements, and ultimately had to commission Panerai to manufacture a watch capable of withstanding extreme conditions. The watchmaker promptly developed a Radiomir prototype, handed it over to the First Submarine Group, and successfully passed all rigorous tests.

In 1938, Panerai officially produced Radiomir watches for the Italian Navy, featuring an exceptionally large cushion-shaped case (47 mm in diameter), strap loops welded to the case, a screw-down crown, and a luminescent dial for clear time legibility in dark underwater conditions, equipped with a Rolex hand-wound movement. The wide strap was made of perforated smooth leather, with an extended size specially designed for diving suits.

In 1943, Panerai introduced its first exclusive chronograph prototype, the Mare Nostrum, designed specifically for senior naval officers. Due to various wartime circumstances, this masterpiece remained at the prototype stage and was never officially released. The crown-protection device of the Radiomir ensured a secure seal, allowing the watch to descend to depths of 200 metres, making it an exceptionally remarkable invention of its time.

In 1949, Panerai patented Luminor, a tritium-based luminescent material that subsequently replaced the Radiomir developed by the manufacture between 1910 and 1915. The names of the Radiomir and Luminor watches originate directly from these two inventions.

In 1956, at the request of the Egyptian Navy, Panerai specially produced an oversized Radiomir watch powered by an Angelus movement boasting an eight-day power reserve, with bezel graduation intervals of five minutes to calculate dive times. Additionally, the manufacture produced a limited edition of watches (approximately 30 pieces) for the navies of other Mediterranean coastal countries. In the same year, Panerai patented its crown-protection device in Italy, a mechanism designed to lock the crown securely and ensure water resistance. This invention was later patented in the United States in 1960.

Following the death of Giuseppe Panerai in 1972, the business was taken over by engineer Dino Zei, who renamed the original family enterprise Panerai S.r.l. The manufacture continued its close collaboration with the Italian Navy, supplying watches, tools, and various precision instruments.

In 1980, Panerai designed a watch capable of withstanding pressures at a depth of 1000 metres. The case of this prototype was crafted from titanium and featured a mechanical automatic movement, a rubber strap, and a dial and hands set with tritium-filled vials for luminescence.

In 1993, Panerai opened up to the civilian market, introducing several limited series including the Luminor, Luminor Marina, and Mare Nostrum chronograph collections.

In 1995, the manufacture introduced the Slytech special edition watch series. Sly is the nickname of renowned actor Sylvester Stallone, an avid watch collector who, while filming the movie Daylight, commissioned Panerai to produce a watch named Submersible for his character's needs. Subsequently, he ordered a Daylight watch with a white dial and a personalised version of the Mare Nostrum. The case backs of all these pieces are engraved with Stallone's signature.

In 1997, the Vendôme Group (now Richemont) acquired Panerai, taking over the production of its watches, compasses, torches, and depth gauges. The manufacture began launching brand-new products and further elevated its production quality. Once supplied exclusively to the Italian Navy, the watches have gained increasing international prominence since their global release.

In 1998, Panerai launched its first mechanical automatic watches on the international market: the Luminor Submersible professional diving watch, the Luminor GMT dual-time watch, and the Luminor Power Reserve watch displaying remaining energy.

In 1999, at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, Panerai unveiled several modern collections featuring significant innovative improvements. These included a slightly smaller Panerai Luminor watch measuring 40 millimetres in diameter, paired with a metal bracelet; another was the Luminor chronograph with timing functions, featuring a redesigned case that cleverly integrated the crown bridge and push-pieces while strictly adhering to the manufacture's consistent aesthetic; yet another was a Panerai Luminor chronograph with a case and bracelet crafted from two exceptional materials: titanium and stainless steel.

In 2000, Panerai designed the Luminor Submersible 1000M professional diving watch, which fully complies with Swiss Watch Industry Standards (NIHS) for diving watches and can withstand deep-sea pressures of 1000 metres. The sapphire crystal on the dial is 5.1 millimetres thick, the case walls measure 3 millimetres thick, and the watch is equipped with a helium escape valve for decompression.

The 2004 Radiomir collection is further highlighted by the 8 Days model. This timepiece exudes a vintage feel, reintroducing a key element of modern mechanical watches — the manual-winding 8-day power reserve movement, successfully tested by Officine Panerai. While the nineteen-forties models featured an Angelus movement, the latest version is based on a Jaeger-LeCoultre movement. The case diameter is 45 millimetres, complementing the brand's patented sophisticated lugs and the curved outer rim of the case, while the screw-down case back and crown ensure water resistance to a depth of 100 metres.

In 2005, the P.2002 movement became the first movement developed entirely in-house by Panerai. The 8-day power reserve model was designed using this state-of-the-art mechanical manual-winding movement. The movement comprises 245 components (including 191 distinct parts), with the main power reserve housed in a novel device featuring three spring barrels (a Panerai patent) and a free-sprung balance wheel operating at a frequency of 4 Hz, with a beat rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The linear power reserve indicator (a Panerai patent) is positioned at the 6 o'clock mark. The P.2002 movement also features a GMT display, a local time display for over 12 hours, alongside AM/PM, hour, minute, second, and date functions. The time-setting system incorporates a seconds-reset device; when the crown is pulled out, the balance wheel stops and the seconds hand automatically returns to zero, ensuring extreme precision when synchronising the watch with a standard time source. Due to its technical complexity, the brand spent four years completing the development of this movement.

  Review:

◆ Panerai has always been one of the most popular products among replica watches; it would be indefensible to say you collect replica watches without owning a Panerai. The 441 is also a star product in replica Panerai watches, having gone through a developmental process from a steel case to a titanium case, and now to the highest version—the ceramic case—which has been refined to near perfection.

◆ The replication accuracy on the front has reached a similarity of 90%, with the three-dimensional font effect and printing quality being extremely close, though there are still subtle differences in colour that do not affect the overall visual impression.

◆ The crystal's transparency is very smooth and clear, and under sunlight and artificial lighting, it does not lose out to the effect of the genuine article.

◆ The three English words "LUMINOR PANERAI GMT" are aligned with the central axis and the 12 o'clock marker, and the spacing between the letters and each marker is true to the original, making it indistinguishable to the naked eye.

◆ Regarding the date window position, the date aligns with the 2 and 4 markers just like the genuine piece, showing great attention to detail. There is a slight difference in the small dot in the middle of the crown guard, but the "REG." and "T.M." engravings on the crown guard match the genuine piece with delicate craftsmanship.

◆ The three English words "LUMINOR PANERAI GMT" are aligned with the central axis and the 12 o'clock marker, and the spacing between the letters and each marker is true to the original, making it indistinguishable to the naked eye.

◆ Summary: Panerai is currently the most popular style. Thanks to advertising by European and American celebrities and commercial promotion, it has become the top choice for men when selecting a watch.

Conclusion:Panerai watches are positioned as high-end timepieces within the sports and leisure sector. If you wish to purchase a replica Panerai watch, you are welcome to scan the QR code to follow our WeChat and make a purchase.
