Introduction to the Vintage Panerai GMT Tourbillon Ceramic Pocket Watch
At the 2013 SIHH,Paneraipresented a GMT tourbillon ceramic pocket watch, marking the brand's first-ever pocket watch release. Given that Panerai started out making military watches, it is hardly surprising they had never launched a pocket watch before—after all, in the heat of battle, you would not have time to pull a pocket watch from your pocket. Pocket watches seen today generally follow a vintage trend, and this time Panerai embraced a touch of retro style to pay tribute to history. Rather than replicating a specific vintage model, it retains Panerai's distinct character, offering a different kind of vintage charm. Let us take a closer look at this retro-inspired Panerai watch.
Introduction to the Vintage Panerai GMT Tourbillon Ceramic Pocket Watch
The GMT Tourbillon ceramic pocket watch is the first pocket watch launched by Panerai, but there is ample precedent in the brand's history. Ever since the opening of Panerai's watch shop in Florence, the words "Pocket watches by the main Swiss makers" appeared in its display windows, yet the Panerai "Laboratorio di Idee" (Workshop of Ideas) was never limited to simply selling pocket watches. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, the brand was creating a series of timing instruments for the Royal Italian Navy.
The diameter of this pocket watch is 59 cm, which is significantly larger than that of an average watch. Encased in a black ceramic case, it provides the designer with a more expansive canvas for display. The dial adopts an open-worked, well-layered, and avant-garde design. One can observe a square honeycomb structure made of nickel.
The elongated hour markers and hour hand are positioned on the uppermost layer of the dial, suspended above the open-worked movement, with white luminescent coating enhancing the sense of depth. Through the second layer of the metal meshwork, the continuously operating open-worked movement is visible, akin to observing a large factory in constant motion.
The tourbillon regulating device is located between the 7 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions. The tourbillon was originally invented to correct positional errors and potential frictional resistance caused by Earth's gravity on pocket watches. The pocket watch is equipped with a movement based on the P.2005 movement launched by Panerai in 2007, which interprets the tourbillon regulating device in an innovative way: the carriage containing the balance wheel and escapement rotates on an axis perpendicular to the balance wheel rather than parallel to it, and it rotates once every 30 seconds instead of the traditional 60 seconds. This construction compensates for timekeeping errors more effectively, thereby measuring time with greater precision.
The bracelet is connected to the case via an open-worked mechanism. The shape of this open-worked mechanism closely resembles the distinctive crown protector of the Panerai Luminor case, and it can be easily detached simply by pressing a small button.
The bracelet is similarly crafted from black ceramic, with link designs inspired by nautical anchor chains. They are connected via universal joints, ensuring exceptional durability alongside optimum flexibility.
The watch is equipped with a P.2005/S skeleton movement, where the 's' stands for 'skeleton'. This movement features three mainspring barrels, offering a power reserve of up to six days, with the remaining power indicated via an indicator mounted on the case back of the pocket watch.
Through the sapphire crystal on the case back of the pocket watch, the exquisite skeleton movement can be admired. Composed of 277 components, this movement utilises a variety of finishing techniques, with a large proportion of the parts undergoing galvanic blackening treatment, adding a mysterious flair to the pure mechanical motion.
