A brief review of the Panerai Radiomir 1940 collection PAM00658 watch

       The Radiomir 1940 collection introduces four brand new watch models, not onlyPaneraiproviding watch enthusiasts with a variety of creative dial options, but also featuring numerous functions to cater to different requirements. The two automatic mechanical movements are entirely manufactured in-house by Panerai's Neuchâtel workshop. The Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Automatic (PAM00627 and PAM00657) is fitted with the P.4001 movement, while the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Power Reserve Automatic (PAM00628 and PAM00658) features the P.4002 movement, bringing further complications to these new additions.

      The P.4001 movement and the P.4002 movement are both developed based on the P.4000 automatic mechanical movement, sharing the same key technical characteristics: an off-centre oscillating weight that winds in both directions, working in tandem with two connected spring barrels to ensure a three-day power reserve. The movements also feature a special device that halts the balance wheel when setting the time, ensuring precise synchronisation. A dual-support bridge for the balance wheel further enhances stability. Both new movements boast exceptionally practical new functions: a date display, a GMT function (with a central hand indicating time in a second time zone), a subsidiary seconds dial with 24-hour indication (for the first time zone), and a power reserve indicator. The only difference between the P.4001 movement and the P.4002 movement lies in the display method of the power reserve.

      The circular power reserve indicator of the P.4001 movement is positioned on the movement bridge, whereas the P.4002 movement places its power reserve display at the 5 o'clock position on the dial. The new movements are equipped with two highly practical mechanisms that make adjusting the time more convenient and precise: the first device stops the balance wheel and resets the seconds hand to zero when the crown is pulled out. The second mechanism allows the hour hand to be adjusted independently forwards or backwards in one-hour increments when setting the local time, without interfering with the minute hand or affecting the watch's operation, whilst also automatically adjusting the date.

       Each of the new Radiomir 1940 watches embodies Panerai's signature emphasis on dial legibility, ensuring they remain crystal clear in both bright light and dim conditions. The classic oversized baton and numerical hour markers are coated with Super-LumiNova® luminescence, and each of the two dials features a distinct design: one utilises a clou de Paris hobnail pattern, whilst the other features vertical guilloché embossing, ensuring functions such as the date display, small seconds, and power reserve indicator stand out clearly against the black dial. Each dial option is paired with a different strap: the hobnail dial comes with a black leather strap, while the vertically embossed dial is matched with a brown raw-cut leather strap.

       The design of the Radiomir 1940 case faithfully reproduces the classic timepiece created by Panerai for the Italian Navy commando frogmen in the 1940s, crafted from polished AISI 316L stainless steel with a water resistance of up to 10 bar (approx. 100 metres).
