Navy Blue Style, Panerai Luminor 1950 Skeleton Tourbillon Watch
2016 The Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva has entered its third day, and the new releases from various luxury watch brands are truly dazzling. The new watches presented by Panerai at this exhibition continue to focus on the Radiomir 1940 and Luminor 1950 collections, launching several new timepieces modeled after past classics, while at the same time pursuing breakthrough innovative technology—an unprecedented Lo Scienziato watch has amazed everyone. This watch pays tribute to the genius Galileo, featuring a case crafted using the innovative “direct metal laser sintering” technology and a skeleton tourbillon movement, in a limited run of 150 pieces.

This limited-edition watch features the classic 47 mm diameter Luminor 1950 case, made from titanium, which is hypoallergenic, corrosion-resistant, and 40% lighter in weight than stainless steel.

To further reduce the weight of the watch, Panerai uses an innovative technique to skeletonise the interior of the case, outlining highly complex geometric patterns while retaining the case's excellent water resistance (approx. 100 metres) and robust qualities. This new technique is called “direct metal laser sintering”, which uses titanium powder with fibre-optic laser technology to build up three-dimensional parts layer by layer, with each layer of material being only 0.02 mm thick. Once fused, they form solid titanium, producing a finished product that cannot be made using traditional techniques, with a much lighter weight.

The watch is equipped with a carbon-black alligator leather strap that complements the case and movement, and the folding clasp, which also features skeletonised detail work, is made from titanium material.

PAM00578The innovative skeletonised design of the watch also incorporates Panerai's signature style, emanating a unique charm from the inside out. Through the small seconds sub-dial positioned at the nine o'clock position, it showcases the internal small device displaying the tourbillon's rotation; another sub-dial is positioned at the three o'clock position, displaying day and night indication for the central second time zone (GMT) hand.

The core oscillating system of the movement

The watch is powered by a Panerai patented tourbillon P.2005 hand-wound mechanical movement. The movement features a skeletonised design and is equipped with low-density titanium bridges and plates, replacing the commonly used brass material which is twice as dense, making the movement 35% lighter than the P.2005/S skeletonised movement. Elements are connected directly to the movement, with features such as the hour markers moved to the outer edge. It provides the watch with a power reserve of up to 6 days, driven by three series-connected spring barrels.
