Why does everyone choose Swiss watches? A look at what makes them so good
, Materials: Regarding the materials used in Rolex watches, they utilise steel 904L. This stainless steel is not only more corrosion-resistant than standard 316L but also resistant to dilute sulphuric acid. Furthermore, there are the blued steel hands and screws; the blue colour of Swiss watch components is pure and fade-resistant. Having undergone 28 processes, they are considered masterpieces in terms of colour, flexibility, and aesthetic lustre.
, Technology: Swiss watchmaking technology is world-renowned. Between 1994 and 2009, Swiss watchmakers filed over 170 patents in China, whereas domestic brands like Seagull and Fiyta filed only 5. These patents cover almost all key horological technologies: balance springs, escapements, calendars, moon phases, perpetual calendars, tourbillons, and more. Examples include the Rolex Oyster case and the Panerai crown protection bridge. While these technologies may seem unremarkable to the average person, they often require years of research and development to perfect.

, Craftsmanship: The craftsmanship of mid-to-high-end Swiss watches excels in its precision. For a single dial, Swiss watchmakers pursue perfection in both design and production. I have had the privilege of seeing data on Swiss watch lathes used for engraving dial patterns; the level of detail and the time and material investment required are staggering. It is clear that the pursuit of craftsmanship in Swiss watches is truly meticulous. It is not just watches; the global fame of items like Swiss Army knives and lighters is also a testament to this superior craftsmanship.

, Talent Development: No matter how large a brand is or how impressive its technology, the wisdom of people is required for research and production. Swiss watchmakers invest immense effort into talent development. Every year, IWC selects a few individuals from over 120 students and apprentices, who then undergo 5 years of study and practice before they can independently craft a timepiece. Each brand typically has its own unique training and management system, but their goal remains the same: to cultivate master watchmakers, not just ordinary technicians.
, Brand Value: The value of a brand is determined by a combination of factors. If your technology is good but your craftsmanship is lacking, or if your craftsmanship is good but your sales are poor, you cannot survive in the long term. To endure, a brand must develop its own unique cultural identity—in other words, the story behind the brand. These stories are often linked to the history of watchmaking, anecdotes about famous wearers, and historical milestones. Examples include the Omega Speedmaster 'Moonwatch' and the Panerai 'First Blood' models. Brands that have survived to this day and remain industry leaders undoubtedly possess extraordinary qualities.
