The Secret Extension Mechanisms of Rolex Watches

Rolex watchesWhether in terms of craftsmanship or quality, they are second to none in the watch community. Naturally, they are also extremely comfortable and snug to wear, which is inseparable from the secret extension mechanism of the watch—the clasp.

The clasp consists of a cover and a folding frame, with one end of the cover and the folding frame connected to the bracelet respectively. The cover features an integrated slot, and the underside of the cover has a circular eyelet that locks with the pin on the folding frame; the folding frame consists of a base, a long arm, and a short arm, with one end of the long arm and short arm pivotally connected to the base, the other end of the long arm connected to the bracelet, and the other end of the short arm connected to the cover.

People who regularly wear leather straps share the same frustration: putting on and taking off the watch day after day causes wear and tear to the strap, especially where the pin passes through the holes. For this reason, clasps have evolved into various forms, solving the awkwardness of wear and tear while remaining aesthetically pleasing. However, when many people choose a watch, whether the clasp is convenient and durable is the main selection criterion.
The clasp is an extension of the watch, and conventional forms are divided into three types: the traditional pin buckle, the double-fold clasp, and the triple-fold clasp. The traditional pin buckle allows the strap to fit more snugly against the wrist, but putting on and taking off the watch day after day causes significant damage to the strap. Especially where the pin passes through, it can lead to cracks in the leather, and over time, the strap will split.

To make up for the shortcomings of traditional pin buckle straps, double-fold and triple-fold clasps were born. Their greatest advancement is that the pinhole is used merely as a part to secure the strap, fixing it in place, while the other end is a metal folding clasp. The daily action of taking off and putting on the watch only involves the folding clasp, which does not damage the strap or the area around the holes at all.
Considering practical use alongside modern fashion elements and trends, watch clasps have evolved to yield a variety of designs. Currently, the most popular clasps on the market include folding clasps, pin buckles, press-stud leather clasps, concealed clasps, folding safety clasps, hook clasps, and butterfly clasps.

To extend the lifespan of a leather strap, the best method is to replace the standard buckle with a butterfly clasp. The so-called butterfly clasp is a specialised fastener used on watch straps, suitable for both metal bracelets and leather straps. Typically crafted from stainless steel, butterfly clasps come in single-fold and double-fold designs, as well as versions with push-button locks, featuring a relatively complex structure.
Regardless of the material, a leather watch strap is a consumable item as it is not particularly durable and has a short lifespan, usually lasting around 2 to 3 years. To extend the lifespan of a leather strap, the best method is to switch to a butterfly clasp. The butterfly clasp is a specialised strap fastener used on both metal bracelets and leather straps. Typically made from stainless steel, these clasps are available in single-fold or double-fold designs, some incorporating push-button locks, boasting a fairly complex construction.
