The four most common watch movements
The movement is one of the most important components of a watch. However, many people are unclear about the different categories of watch movements when purchasing a watch, and do not know how to choose one that suits them. Today, Anya shares some useful knowledge about the four common movement classifications, and everyone is welcome to learn along.
I. Automatic winding movement
An automatic winding movement is wound by the motion of the watch, using a rotating oscillating weight to gradually tension the mainspring, thereby achieving self-winding operation. Automatic movements are chosen for the majority of modern mechanical watches; as long as you wear it daily, manual winding is unnecessary, and the evenly tensioned mainspring resulting from physical activity is more beneficial to timekeeping accuracy.
2. Manual-winding movement
The mainsprings of the earliest movements required human intervention, meaning the wearer had to manually wind the crown for the watch to run properly. They were generally wound every 24 hours. Manual-winding movements are also the earliest mechanical type, with precursors appearing in pocket watches as early as the 15 century. They are still used by some luxury brands today, though wearers occasionally forget to wind them, causing the timekeeping to stop.
3. Quartz movement
When discussing quartz movements, one must mention the Quartz Crisis of the 70s and 80s. Its birth impacted the entire Swiss watchmaking industry, causing many European mechanical watch factories to declare bankruptcy and prematurely end their watchmaking careers. It was also its existence that spurred the creation of Swatch watches, proving each generation to be stronger than the last.
In fact, the principle of a quartz movement is that, instead of an oscillating balance wheel acting as an escapement, it features only a quartz oscillator driven by electrical energy from a battery. Many women's watch models opt for quartz movements due to considerations of thickness and aesthetics.
4. In-house manufacture movement
This type of movement could be either manual-winding or automatic. It refers to a movement where key components—such as the mainplate, bridges, and plates—are produced entirely in-house by the workshop, allowing them to name the calibre themselves.
Previously, ETA movements under the Swatch Group were major suppliers for many brands. However, in 2002, the Swatch Group announced it would no longer supply raw ETA movements to external brands (many of which would finish raw ETA movements and then market them as in-house manufacture movements), leading to the emergence of numerous independent watchmaking workshops.
